Job Description

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. is seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Protein and Viral Vector Purification department as a Scientist II. US - Frederick, MD/BID

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct downstream activities including depth filtration, tangential flow filtration, and column-based purification of antibodies, non-antibody recombinant proteins, and viral vectors (primarily AAV and LV).
  • Develop methods to enhance the purification of proteins and viral vectors.
  • Perform analytical characterization of proteins and viral vectors, including concentration/titer, purity, aggregation, fragmentation, glycan profiles, charge variants, and biological activity.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation hardware and software related issues for FPLC and HPLCs (e.g., AKTA Pure FPLC, AKTA Avant FPLC, and Vanquish UHPLC).
  • Design and conduct experiments, accurately analyze data, and interpret results.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful implementation of research projects.
  • Share research findings with colleagues within the organization and present at scientific conferences.

Education:

  • Strong background in protein purification/characterization with a Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of relevant academic or industry experience, a Master's degree plus 0-3+ years of experience.

Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in protein purification by column chromatography (affinity, IEX, NiNTA, reverse-phase, etc.).
  • Proficiency in protein purification and analytical characterization using standard laboratory techniques, including AKTA-FPLC, SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, SEC-HPLC, IEX-HPLC, RP-HPLC, HIC, HILIC, affinity chromatography, ELISA, ligand-binding assays, and functional cell-based assays.
  • Viral vector purification and characterization experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Mass Spectrometry-based proteomics is a plus.
  • Ability to efficiently implement technology transfer, particularly across sites.
  • Ability to think creatively and apply existing analytical technologies to new applications.
  • Familiarity with hardware and software for FPLC and HPLC instruments (e.g., AKTA Pure FPLC, AKTA Avant FPLC, and Vanquish UHPLC).
  • Track record of completing tasks within established timelines.
  • Excellent time management and multitasking capabilities.
  • Proficiency in handling multiple projects and prioritizing tasks efficiently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present scientific results in a clear, concise, and accurate manner to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to generate new insights, achieve results, and address problems.
