The Materials and Structural Analysis Division (MSD) enables customers to find meaningful answers to questions that accelerate breakthrough discoveries and ultimately change the world. We design, manufacture, and support a broad range of high-performance microscopy and spectroscopy workflows on wafers and single chips that provide images and answers in the micro-, nano-, and picometer scales. We combine hardware and software expertise in electron and ion microscopy with deep application knowledge in the materials science, life sciences, electronics, and natural resources markets. Our worldwide Electron Microscopy colleagues are dedicated to our customers' pursuit of discovery and resolution to global challenges.

How will you make an impact?

As an Operations Engineer II, you will be part of a passionate and hardworking team in Eindhoven working with our ground-breaking Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM)! Our TEM technology enables and supports Nobel Prize-winning research and played a significant role in the early assessment of COVID19. The impact of your work is visible, and you will actively chip into the latest breakthroughs in Science!

A high-end TEM system comprises of several sophisticated modules enabling the high-resolution imaging and numerous other applications like EDX, EELS etc. In this function within Operations Engineering, you will support the sustainability of one of the advanced modules to the manufacturing. A proven background in Physics or Electromechanics are the desired skills for this role, however, passion for innovative technology and demeanor to accept challenges are the key virtues to make this role a success. This is a mid-level engineering role where you will also manage improvement projects. Your main task is to be supporting the manufacturing but also work cross-functionally with Service, Logistics, Product Lifecycle Management, Quality, Sourcing and Supply Chain partners.

As part of the Operations Engineering, this is an opportunity to join our fast-paced, dynamic team, where we ask you to focus on supporting manufacturing to ensure efficient processes alongside highly technically competent colleagues.

What will you do?

  • Providing technical support to the factory ensuring that Thermo Fisher is capable of shipping high quality systems timely to its customers
  • Areas of impact; (S)TEM electron detection units, such as annular dark field imaging, fluorescent-screen, solid state electron detection, direct electron camera systems, electronic submodules, cabling structures, functional module testing and related electronics.
  • Initiating and leading small sized multi-functional Operations improvement projects
  • Supporting factory and field service engineers with the first builds, installs and upgrades of newly introduced systems and modules to ensure accurate working order
  • Solving sophisticated problems and ensuring system specifications are met
  • Crafting and maintaining work instructions and defining way of working (factory process flow)
  • Performing hands-on assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and training of personnel as required
  • Working in close collaboration with the suppliers to tackle technical/quality issues and supporting the introduction of new parts and modules from suppliers into manufacturing
  • Submitting or implementing engineering changes to improve quality, manufacturability, costs of components/modules

How will you get there?

  • Demonstrable minimum experience 3-5 years in the field of Engineering (in a manufacturing environment). Knowledge and/or experience with electron microscopy is huge plus
  • A bachelor in a technical field such as Physics or Electromechanical is required, or a secondary vocational education (mbo++) and meaningful work experience that demonstrates required skills (see "areas of impact")
  • Ability to cope with the dynamics in a manufacturing environment
  • Be able to create technical user documentation and engineering reports
  • Experience in high tech industry and working in cleanroom environment
  • Excellent English language skills (verbal and in writing), Dutch is a huge plus
  • Be a collaborative teammate with pragmatic approach.
  • Mid-level experience in project management and creating related deliverables
  • Knowledge about Statistical engineering would be advantageous
