Location/Division Specific Information:

The Asheville Manufacturing site is in the Laboratory Products Division within Thermo Fisher Scientific. Our laboratory equipment products are used primarily by pharmaceutical companies for drug discovery and development and by biotechnology companies and universities for life science research to advance the prevention and cure of diseases and improve quality of life. Our offering consists of equipment, accessories, and services for sample preparation, storage and protection, and analysis.

How Will You Make an Impact?

You will support the manufacturing process by fabricating and constructing laboratory refrigeration systems required for standard and custom equipment.

A Day in the Life:

Fabricate and assemble products and parts according to specifications, build sheets, verbal instructions, etc, with emphasis on safety and quality.

Evacuate and charge units by pumping gases and oils per detailed specifications.

Troubleshoots work-related problems by applying knowledge and experience toward resolution and taking appropriate steps for assistance.

Inspect assembly components for leaks by connecting gas handler and performing specified process and listening for and observing results.

Perform mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration related troubleshooting when working on units and makes vital repairs.

Troubleshoots fault findings to identify cause of fault, best action for resolution, and make repairs to ensure unit is operating accurately and returns to final inspection stage.

Enters and retrieves data by unit/serial number for final inspection report and testing using Excel and other applications and performs troubleshooting with computer components.

Inspect and test component to ensure that quality and workmanship meets standards before moving piece to next stage of production.

Interpret test data found in charts, etc, to ensure operational quality of finished unit.

Perform final inspection to ensure that all faults have been identified and resolved.

Perform routing of tubing, brazing of connections, and inspection for leaks, charging of systems, in a manner that meets quality and safety standards.

Verify conformance of work piece to specifications using scales, refrigeration, cap tube, vacuum and pressure gauges, calipers, ruler, measuring tape, etc.

Operates tube cutting and flaring equipment using machines and hand tools.

Bolts clip, screw, cement, braze, or otherwise fasten parts together by hand, or using hand tools or portable power tools.

Calibrate circuit boards as designated by PSS in conjunction with referencing product specifications on-line.

Complete documents such as Final Inspection Reports, Total Quality Control sheets, etc., as determined by process guidelines.

Enter product related data into computer system to supervise component serial numbers, scan bar codes, production rates (percent good), supervise physical location, etc.

Transport, store, and replaces gases, tanks, etc, by identifying contents and understanding related safety issues.

Remove burrs and rough spots from parts with hand file and portable pneumatic grinder when needed.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience:

  • Required: No previous work experience required
  • Preferred: Previous work experience in manufacturing, operations, production or lab setting or related field
  • Preferred: Experience in a cGMP environment

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to read and differentiate part numbers, labels, and work instructions.
  • Follows company policies including safety and environmental policies.
  • Self-starter with ability to react quickly to changing priorities.
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet encouraged production goals.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

  • Standing, bending, reaching and handling bulky parts is common to the job. Frequently lifts up to 50 pounds.
