Field Application Scientist, Senior Bioinformatics and Data Management

Position Location: Melbourne, Sydney

Reports to: Support Manager, Life Sciences Group, ANZ

As a Field Application Scientist for Bioinformatics and Data Management, you will partner with our customer through the adoption and use of our High Throughput Sequencing portfolio. With an emphasis on our Next Generation Sequencing and Microarray technology, you will support the business growth by creating demand, accelerating sales and building market share.

A day in the Life:

  • Perform product demonstrations at customer or company sites.
  • Prepare and present seminars to wide array of audiences.
  • Deliver comprehensive technical training for customers and colleagues.
  • Collaborates with Sales Representatives to develop technical selling strategies.
  • Provides ongoing onsite or remote application and instrument support.

Keys to Success:

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.S./B.A.) in science.
  • Educated to PhD level (or equivalent experience) in Bioinformatics & IT, Genetic or Molecular Biology.
  • 3-4 years of directly related experience from the qualifications above.

Experience

  • Broad experience in providing support on Bioinformatics related queries.
  • Hands-on experience with the relevant sequence analysis tools.
  • An understanding of the biology behind genotyping, gene expression profiling, and genetic mapping.
  • Use of statistical methods and mathematical models in the interpretation of biological data is highly desirable.
  • An excellent understanding of genomic databases and their annotations (GenBank, RefSeq, ENSEMBL, dbSNP).
  • Extensive Linux experience.
  • Proven computer skills including proficiency with a scripting language (e.g. Perl, BioPerl, Python) in a Linux and Windows environment.
  • Software and algorithm development skills (e.g. in C/C++/Java/Matlab), familiarity with statistical analysis tools (e.g. R, S-Plus, SAS), database development experience (Oracle, SQL, XML), related industry experience, and a record of publications, are pluses.
  • Ability to guide customers through the many complex data and networking strategies for system implementation.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Excellent scientific skills in the areas of Sample Preparation, data acquisition and analysis.
  • Teaching experience, highly desirable - e.g. supervision of students, mentoring, training
  • Outstanding communication skill / ability to present to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work well across diverse teams.
  • Outstanding observation & troubleshooting skills.
  • Able to work independently while maintaining focus and productivity
  • Ability to adapt quickly to change.
  • Excellent time management skills.

Additional Requirements / Work Environment

  • Ability to travel within the territory to carry out primary responsibilities.
  • Proficient in English (oral and written).
  • Valid driving permit required.
  • Adhere to OHS policies and procedures and ensure a safe and healthy workplace environment.
  • Adhere to the Chain of Responsibility obligations under the Australian Heavy Vehicle National Law.
