A Day in the Life:

Operational Management:

  • Supervise daily operations of utility systems to ensure efficient and reliable service.
  • Monitor system performance and implement improvements to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Coordinate maintenance and repair activities to minimize downtime and service interruptions.

Team Leadership:

  • Lead a team of utility workers, providing mentorship, training, and support.
  • Schedule and assign tasks to team members, ensuring adequate coverage and prioritization.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and implement development plans for team members.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure all utility operations align with local, state, and federal regulations and safety standards.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits, addressing any issues promptly.
  • Develop and enforce safety protocols and emergency response procedures.

Coordination and Communication:

  • Collaborate with other departments and external agencies to coordinate utility projects and services.
  • Collaborate effectively with collaborators, providing updates on utility operations and addressing concerns.
  • Prepare and present reports on utility performance, maintenance activities, and project progress.

Budget and Resource Management:

  • Assist in developing and managing the utility budget, ensuring efficient operations.
  • Monitor expenditures and find opportunities for cost savings.
  • Coordinate the procurement and inventory of necessary equipment, tools, and supplies.

Keys to Success:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, utility management, or a related field is required.
  • 5+ years of experience in utility operations, with 2+ years in a supervisory role.
  • Relevant certifications in utility management or specific utility systems (e.g., water treatment, electrical systems) are helpful.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Solid understanding of utility systems and related technologies.
  • Proficient in using computer software for utility management and reporting.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Working Conditions:

  • The role may require working in various environmental conditions, including outdoor settings and potentially hazardous locations.
  • Availability for on-call duties and emergency response may be required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
  • Must meet the physical demands of the job, including standing, walking, and manual dexterity.
