Job Description
Business Title: EHS Specialist III
Summary:
Provide guidance and support on matters pertaining to Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) to the EHS Team, Clients and the site, including Commercial and PDS Operations. The primary function of the job is to maintain compliance to environmental regulatory requirements and to support the continuation of the current programs and progression of our environmental management system.

Essential Functions:
- Collaborate with the EHS Team to establish standard methodologies for the Whitby site and exchange knowledge and expertise with the global EHS Team.
- Drive the implementation of EHS programs and management systems at the site, including development of targets and objectives. Coordinate with site leadership as required to gain support and ensure compliance.
- Develop and implement EHS Programs through the update of existing programs and the development of new programs as needed. Develop audit protocols, procedures and practices to support and sustain these EHS Programs.
- Develop and conduct EHS training such as New Employee Onboarding, WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System), Monthly EHS Modules, Department/Function-specific training, compound and active-specific training and other training as required.
- Participate in new product development and liaise with Project Managers, Process Engineers, and Clients. Conduct new product/process/project assessments, attend new project meetings, and evaluate EHS aspects of new projects.
- Complete and/or assist special EHS Projects.
- Provide guidance, back-up and support to other EH&S team members and Health Center.
- Lead or participate in EHS audits and/or investigations with regulatory bodies, Clients and Corporate representatives.
- Implement Global EHS Standards and complete regulatory and/or corporate reporting as required.
- Provide Environmental expertise in the following areas:
- National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) reporting
- New Substance Notification Regulation (NSNR) substance tracking and submissions
- Dangerous goods shipping and guidance on regulations
- Waste management programs including waste audits and reduction work plans
- Waste water discharge and compliance with Serwer Use By-law
- Environmental Compliance Approval tracking and reporting
- Provide Health & Safety support in the following areas:
- Incident investigations including root cause analysis and corrective actions
- Joint Health & Safety Committee
- Risk assessments
- Equipment safety reviews and new equipment inspections
- Pre-start health and safety reviews
- Safety programs such as LOTO (Lock Out and Tag Out) and machine guarding
- Provide Industrial Hygiene (IH) support, based on expertise, in the following areas:
- Air monitoring and ergonomic assessments
- IH assessments on containment
- IH sampling plans and sampling strategies
- IH reports and presentations
- Respiratory protection and fit testing
- Reproductive hazard assessments
- Combustible dust hazard assessments
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- B.Sc. in a related field
- EHS Certificate or Diploma
- Working towards a Professional Designation -Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
Experience:
- 3-5 years of previous EHS experience in Environmental, Industrial Hygiene or Occupational Health & Safety positions.
- Minimum 3 years of Chemical, manufacturing, or pharmaceutical work experience.
Equivalency:
Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant work experience may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Strong working knowledge of the various EHS related Management System Standards such as ISO-14001, ISO-45001, ISO-31000 and ISO-50001. Good knowledge of relevant EHS legislation on a Federal, Provincial and Regional level. Good knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Effective written, interpersonal, project planning and presentation skills. Strong ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a high-pressure environment. Ability to influence decision making at all levels in the organization. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Proficiency with the English Language.

Carry out all duties within strict compliance to Patheon quality systems SOP's and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Maintain workspace in a clean and orderly fashion. Actively engage in and adhere to departmental systems in order to maintain a smooth and efficient workflow (visual management, scheduling systems, etc.). Be client and patient conscious at all times. Understand Key Performance Indicators and strive to improve the performance of the team by identifying areas for system improvements and engage in problem solving. Models positive thinking and is open to change, motivating the team to adapt to shifts in priorities and new ways of working. Proactively identify areas for improvement in the execution of procedures. Communicate risks to timelines in a proactive manner. Consistently strives to improve skills and knowledge in related field.
Physical Requirements:
Light physical effort and fatigue. Walks, sits or stands for limited periods. May require occasional equipment operation including keyboard equipment. Lifts light items for limited duration. Typically located in a comfortable indoor area. There may be regular exposure to mild physical discomfort from factors such as dust, fumes or odours, temperature extremes, loud noise, strong drafts, or bright lights. Use of Personal Protective equipment may be required and may include any of the following: safety glasses, safety shoes, lab coat, gloves, hair net, beard cover, safety apron, respirator on occasionally.
