Job Description
The CBSA Canada Compliance Specialist III plays a significant role in ensuring seamless imports and exports for Thermo Fisher businesses, while adhering to all applicable Canadian laws, regulations, and Thermo Fisher policies. This position is responsible for promoting global trade compliance through training, consultation, mentorship to employees, and conducting assessments and audits of international trade practices.
What Will I Do?
Serve as the subject matter expert on Canadian customs regulations, policies, and procedures, keeping up-to-date with any changes or updates.
Lead and oversee the customs compliance function, providing guidance and support to the customs team.

Develop and implement customs compliance strategies, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with Canadian customs laws.
Conduct audits and assessments to identify areas of non-compliance and implement corrective actions.
Collaborate with internal team members, such as supply chain, logistics, and finance teams, to ensure seamless customs clearance and compliance.
Interacts and engages with operational, supervisory, and line and middle management across designated area, and corporate GTC.
Establish and maintain relationships with Canadian customs authorities and other relevant government agencies.
Stay informed about international trade agreements and programs that may impact customs compliance.
Provide training and guidance to internal teams on customs compliance regulations and procedures.
Monitor and analyze customs data to identify trends, opportunities for improvement, and potential risks.
How Will I Get Here?
Requirement Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in customs compliance, specifically with a focus on Canadian customs regulations.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian customs laws, regulations, and procedures, including tariff classification, valuation, origin determination, and customs documentation requirements.
- Excellent understanding of international trade agreements and programs, such as USMCA, CETA, and WTO regulations.
- Consistent track record of successfully handling customs compliance programs and leading a team.
- Applies critical thinking, information gathering, social skills and judgement to identify and analyze routine GTC problems to generate practical evidence informed solutions while considering legislation and industry standards.
- Demonstrates ability to learn key business drivers, processes, operations, and cultural practices.
- Excellent communication and social skills to effectively collaborate with internal and external partners.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite to support the operation in its daily functions.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to work with minimal direction.
- Ability to handle multiple projects, involving cross business functionality.
- Works well under general direction of Manager with personal responsibility for outputs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in relevant area preferred
- Post Secondary Diploma in Customs/Border Services Administration or International Trade
- Technical or scientific background
- Certified Customs Specialist (CCS)
- Certified Trade Compliance Specialist (CTCS)
- Experience in delivering training
