The Position

The Application engineer works at the intersection of the development, sales support and the scientific community. This person continually collaborates with Technology, Systems and Software groups to ensure that system requirements are well understood, developed, coordinated and thoroughly tested.

Due to the extensive integration of hardware and software in all company products the successful Applications Scientist develops detailed in-depth understanding of the application of our tools and the implications of using and testing software when sophisticated hardware interactions are at stake.

The Application Scientist will also provide customer and market feedback to Product Marketing and Product Execution Managers; participates on defining the needs for new solutions. This person also conducts customer demonstrations and jobs, participates in technical discussions and collaborates on applications training with the customers.

Key responsibilities include, but are not exclusively:

  • Working in compliance with legislation and IMS
  • Demonstrates good independent judgment and thinking to develop creative ways or in selecting known methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • Facilitates and may lead multi-functional improvement and other projects from inception to completion.
  • The ability to build and maintain the right working climate.
  • Acts as an advisor to peers and project resources to meet schedules and/or resolve technical problems.
  • Ensures that activities are carried out according to the principle of "Customer facing in all that we do"
  • Networks with internal and external personnel in own area of expertise, interacts with supervisors, group leaders, customers and peers. Some interactions may involve Sr. management. Make sure to work safety, biological safety, fire safety, hygiene of work and other regulatory standards. Clean and maintain work area and consigned tools
  • Interactions normally involves matters and coordination between functional areas, other departments, or customers and the company.
  • Other duties as assigned

Specific responsibilities:

  • Translate customer needs into workable solutions and technical specification
  • Perform system (SW, applications, instrument) validation and evaluation, provide and own test plans and consolidated test reports
  • Maintain cross-team communication among various Thermo Fisher sites related to development and deployment of the new products
  • Prepare and perform demos, customer jobs, customer trainings and internal trainings
  • Handle customer samples, data and related information
  • Develop Best Practice Documents (BPDs) and Application notes for reproducible distribution of application implementation and training of customers by applications specialists
  • Feed R&D team and Product portfolio group with information and customer feedback
  • Recommend and advise on technical direction for potential applications or use of products consistent with customer requirements and feasibility.
  • Maintain and nurture pool of electron microscopy, focused ion beam and microanalysis expertise (technology, methodology) for Semiconductor markets
  • Work on collaboration projects with external partners
  • Deliver innovative, specific marketing and sales collateral to the Product Marketing group for incorporation into marketing, sales training and sales material.
  • Mentor junior colleagues with their technical and professional development.

Requirements:

  • PhD or MSc in Material Science, Physics, Engineering
  • Ability to work independently as well as in the team
  • Experienced in using software in complex products with extensive hardware interactions
  • Hands-on experience of analytical equipment; specifically FIB/SEM systems
  • Experience with TEM analysis is welcome
  • Knowledge of programming (e.g. in Python) is an advantage
  • Strong communicative skills (both verbal and written)
  • Result oriented
  • Ability to interact with cross - functional and cross - cultural teams.
  • Ability to travel both domestically as well as internationally up to 50% of the time, mostly to South-East Asia region and US
  • Language skills (English), willing to learn Czech
