About the Internship
The Regional Planning and Coordination unit in the Planning Department provides agencywide thought leadership and analytic support on emerging strategic challenges facing the agency and the region. This summer, we'll be looking at improving our toolkit for examining truck activity patterns and the demographic characteristics of communities neighboring our facilities. We are looking for an intern with an interest in geospatial data analysis and strong coding skills to work on these collaborative team projects.
Responsibilities
- Analyze geolocation data to understand origins, destinations, and routing for trucks visiting Port Authority facilities.
- Create tools to communicate the results of this analysis.
- Develop dashboards and story maps to communicate demographic and socioeconomic data on neighborhoods surrounding our facilities.
- Prepare presentations on your findings.
- Participation in other projects depending on time availability and circumstances.

Minimum Qualifications
- Enrollment at a college/university through Summer 2025 and into the Fall 2025 semester
- Major in Planning, Public Policy, Geography, Engineering, or a related field.
- Rising senior or graduate-level student
- Experience with ArcGIS or other geospatial analysis software
- Experience with a scripting language such as Python or R
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with teams on complex projects
- Experience using scripting languages to analyze large datasets
- Demonstrated interest in transportation and/or urban policy
- Demonstrated interest in public service
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
Internship Details
- The start date will be Thursday, May 29, 2025
- The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 22, 2025
- This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)
- The format is expected to be hybrid

Compensation & Benefits
- The hourly rate range is $17.63 to $29.57 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
