About the Internship

The Economics Unit in the Planning & Regional Development Department is responsible for providing the agency with a variety of economic activities such as forecasting, benefit cost analysis, and other functions. The Economics Unit works across all departments of the Port Authority (Aviation, Tunnels, Bridges and Terminals, PATH, and the Commercial Ports) to give economic insights into macroeconomic conditions that influence business activities.

Responsibilities

  • Independently research regional and state-level economic topics relating to transportation, environment justice, and regional demographics.
  • Compile statistics at both national and regional level.
  • Have discussions with relevant agency line and staff departments.
  • Conduct quantitative research on key Port Authority initiatives.
  • Prepare analysis on topics and policies relevant to the Port Authority that are digestible for public and/or staff.
  • Develop outreach materials on relevant topics and present research at end of internship.
  • Write professional level documents and emails.
  • Provide support for other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment at a college/university through Summer 2025 and into the Fall 2025 semester
  • Major in Economics, Statistics, Planning, Public Policy or a related field
  • Rising senior or graduate-level student
  • Experience with Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong interest in Economics, Demographics, Transportation, and Quantitative Modeling.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to deliver timely work product.
  • Organized with experience working independently on multiple projects.
  • Working knowledge of modeling software such as R, Stata, Eviews, PYTHON, or others

Internship Details

  • The start date will be Thursday, May 29, 2025
  • The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 22, 2025
  • This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)
  • The format is expected to be hybrid

Compensation & Benefits

  • The hourly rate range is $17.63 to $29.57 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
