About the Role:

The Communications Equipment Specialist (CES) is responsible for repairing, testing, configuring, installing, and modifying electronic equipment that includes Public Safety radio systems, CCTV, intercoms, public addresses, computer-based systems, fiber optic systems, and related equipment.



Responsibilities:


CESs install and maintain radio antenna and transmission line systems and a wide variety of electronic communications systems utilizing industry knowledge of standard practices, methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in radio and electronic testing, repair, and maintenance. CESs interprets and works from electrical and electronic drawings, plans, diagrams, and specifications, and prepares rough, working drawings modifications. Work includes:

  • In-building Distributed Antenna Systems for radio communications. (Wireless systems).
  • Public Safety radio systems.
  • Public address systems.
  • Closed Circuit Television Systems
  • IP Network-based communications equipment. (ROIP, VOIP)
  • Fiber Optics, including RF- over- fiber.

CESs respond to emergencies during normal working hours and off-hours, make decisions and take actions necessary to restore equipment and systems to service. CESs estimate the time, materials, and equipment necessary for work and are responsible for assuring that the necessary material and equipment are at the job site when needed. Shift work required.

Communications Equipment Specialists report to a central location in New Jersey or World Trade Center NYC , and then are dispatched to perform work at various Port Authority facilities throughout the New York/New Jersey region.


Minimum Qualifications:


Candidates must be present the following qualifications to be considered:

  • High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution
  • Must possess General Radiotelephone Operator's License issued by the FCC. (Applicants without this license will be required to obtain it within three months of employment).
  • Three years of paid work experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of electronic systems. Skilled in the use of radiofrequency and fiber optic test equipment.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the Air Brakes endorsement or higher. Applicants without a Class B CDL must obtain a Class B CDL Permit with endorsement before their first day of work and will be required to obtain a Class B CDL with endorsement within three months of employment.

Desired Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will present the following qualification profile:

  • Extensive knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials used in the testing, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of electronic communication equipment and systems.
  • Working knowledge of FCC Rules and Regulations
  • Demonstrated familiarity with current equipment, components, and techniques used in the and mobile radio industry, including vehicular installations.
  • Experience with test equipment: Multimeters, Spectrum Analyzers, Power Meters, Service Monitors
  • Understanding of basic networking: Switches, Routers, DHCP, DNS, Command line programming.
  • CCNA, MCSA, COMP TIA + Certifications a plus
  • Previous industry experience with T1, SONET, Multiplexing, DSL, FTTP, FTTN, FTTH, VOIP
  • Previous experience in one or more of the following industries/professions: Telecom, Cellular, Audio/Visual, Radio & Television Broadcasting, Aeronautics
  • Awareness of safety precautions involving electromagnetic radiation exposure

Selection Process:


Qualified candidates will be assessed via a practical exam or interview.

After a phone interview, successful candidates will be invited to participate in a hands-on practical exam. The practical exam will measure the candidate's knowledge, skill, and ability to work with tools, equipment, and materials used in communications systems maintenance and repair, demonstrating professional trade practices required for this job title. Candidates will be tested for their ability to work at various heights.

Practical exam:

The practical exam will also include four of the following

  • Interconnecting Radio Base Station Equipment and Antenna Network
  • Bench Troubleshooting of a Faulty FM Receiver
  • Installing Communications Cable Connectors
  • Bench Troubleshooting a Regulated Power Supply
  • Connecting Security TV Network Equipment

The starting salary for the Communication Equipment Specialist position is: $38.56. This salary is subject to the collective bargaining agreement for this position.
