Description
The Law Department is seeking an experienced individual who is an expert in coverage, claim management, cost recovery and contractual risk transfer to join their team as an Attorney within the Claims practice area. This position will report to the Assistant General Counsel, Claims.
Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Pursue funds due to the Port Authority on large or complex matters including preparing legal arguments to pursue such funds and direct negotiation with carriers, contractors, tenants and other third-parties, or their counsel. In coordination with the AGC of Claims, develop strategies to capture additional opportunities to transfer any risks borne by the Agency.
- Manage large or significant pre-suit internal investigations through coordination with internal partners. Coordinate and confirm Assist on document preservation requests and replies including coordination with internal partners and claim representatives.
- Review and pursue coverage and risk transfer protections on behalf of the Agency which includes preparing coverage letters, reviewing Policies, conducting legal research, review of contractual rights and requirements, negotiating with carriers and third- parties. Draft revised language for our contracts to improve risk transfer through both insurance requirements and indemnity. In concert with Treasury and the AGC of claims, review and organize the Port's own obligations to provide insurance for third parties.
- Assist in the negotiation of settlements on matters, when deemed appropriate to do so including offering support to in-house team. Attend mediation and settlement conferences on behalf of the Agency, review legal pleadings, court filings and discovery to evaluate exposure to the Port Authority and its Excess Carriers.
- Advise the General Counsel, the First Deputy General Counsel, the Assistant General Counsel, Claims Manager, Treasury Department, Department Directors and Senior Management on program trends, significant case developments and program management.
- Stay abreast of new laws, legal decisions, legal and legislative actions that affect the Port Authority and advise Senior Staff of their implications. Offer legal advice to the Claims Department as needed.
- Participate in special projects, as assigned, including legal research for the Claims practice group and the Law Department, as well planning for Claims operating system upgrades.

Qualifications:
Candidates must possess the following qualifications to be eligible for this position:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- Minimum of four (4) years' experience in complex claim management, portfolio management and/or coverage preferred. Claims, risk or coverage asked.
- Candidates with experience at organizations who manage large risk portfolios or law firms with a strong coverage and/or subrogation practice are strongly preferred.
- Proven experience in the management and oversight of complex claims, risk management practices and compliance.
- Understanding of special requirements of governmental agencies, as well as General Liability Claims, No-Fault and Federal Employee Act (FELA) claims.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills (as well as the ability to present to a variety of audiences), including demonstrated experience establishing, interacting and fostering working relationships with a multitude of constituents and stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and electronic matter management systems including opening and tracking matters online.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative office environment, with demonstrated flexibility and resourcefulness in analyzing and resolving a wide-range of complex and novel matters, including those of a sensitive nature with monetary exposure.
