Tuesday, April 15, 2025

The Los Angeles Times has an opening for a deputy editor in the Environment, Health and Science Department. The deputy will be responsible for assigning and editing breaking news, features, enterprise stories, newsletters and investigations across all subjects that fall under the umbrella of environment/climate, health and medicine, and general science.

We are looking for an enterprising and resourceful editor with the ability and enthusiasm to tell compelling stories across platforms — digital/print, text/visual, audio/video, etc. — that will resonate with readers. Because this position will work directly with reporters of varying experience levels, we're also seeking an attentive and empathetic manager who is motivated to develop and inspire the team's journalists. You should be a skilled communicator who can work collaboratively with not only the editors and reporters on the team, but also colleagues in editorial, photo, product, business and other departments.

The ideal candidate will have experience editing environment, health and science stories — subject area expertise is a must, given the nature of our team's remit.

Our coverage is oriented towards Los Angeles and the surrounding areas, and California as a whole. Though some stories will be national or global in nature, expertise in covering climate and health issues in California specifically is highly desirable.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor local, national and global climate and health news to ensure The Times is part of, or ahead of, the conversation
  • Assign and edit the kind of climate and health journalism you would click on and subscribe to
  • Ensure that reporting is fair, accurate, high quality and meets the ethical standards and style of the publication
  • Help manage staff, providing continual feedback to employees on their performance, to develop talent and push the department to do better
  • Represent the department at editorial meetings as needed
  • Help set a strategic course for the department that prioritizes digital development, grows audience and digital subscriptions, and fulfills current company goals
  • Collaborate with newsroom staff, including photo, design and copy desks, to produce stories on all platforms
  • Ensure that the department meets digital and print production deadlines and maintains ideal story flow
  • Complete administrative tasks such as timecard approval and absence requests for direct reports
  • Help recruit and hire new staffers
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • A minimum of seven years of journalism experience
  • Expertise in environment, health and/or science journalism
  • A track record of journalistic excellence
  • Familiarity with the unique issues of California when it comes to climate and health
  • Experience in a management/leadership role
  • Experience working in a digital environment, including using content management systems and web publishing tools
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues on teams such as photography, video, marketing and business
  • Familiarity with data analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Microsoft Power BI, Charbeat, etc.

This is a management role and will be based in El Segundo, Calif. Occasional night and weekend work is expected.

Qualified candidates should submit a resume, cover letter and portfolio to Environment, Health and Science Editor Elijah Wolfson at the apply link.
