The Los Angeles Times is seeking an editorials editor for the Opinion section. The Times editorial page strives to reflect the most compelling concerns and interests of the people of California, particularly the diverse communities of Southern California.

The principal duties of this position include leading and managing staff editorial writers and editing signed and unsigned editorials. This role will also involve writing editorials as needed. Deep knowledge about state government and local issues and experience covering California are critical to success in this job.

The ideal candidate is an experienced editor and a powerful writer, open-minded, eager to engage with many points of view, collegial and collaborative.

Because the board frequently meets with newsmakers, thinkers and officials, this editor should feel comfortable with public speaking, including appearances on broadcast programs, videos, podcasts and other platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead regular editorial board discussions and other meetings as needed
  • Direct editorial writers on the most urgent state and local issues of the day
  • Edit editorials with precision and accuracy to meet daily deadlines
  • Write editorials when needed
  • Attend meetings and engage with policymakers and newsmakers
  • Adhere to the company's editorial ethics guidelines and all company policies regarding employee conduct
  • Lead editorial projects as they arise
  • Help writers develop their talents and elevate their work
  • Manage direct reports, including conducting performance reviews, approving timecards and absence requests, and other tasks
  • Help recruit and hire new staffers

Requirements:

  • At least seven years of experience editing, reporting and writing
  • Deep knowledge about a broad range of California state and local issues
  • Ability to analyze public policy, government policies and law clearly and concisely
  • Ability to edit with attention to accuracy and style
  • Management experience is highly desirable
  • Impeccable interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team setting and multitask in a deadline-driven environment
  • Commitment to digital experimentation
  • Strict adherence to journalism ethics and legal standards

This is a management role and will be based in El Segundo, Calif. Occasional night and weekend work may be required.

The pay scale the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of the posting is $140,000 to $150,000 and takes into account a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, experience, training, licenses, certifications, and other business or organizational needs. Compensation will be determined based on the above factors along with the requirements of the position. At the L.A.
