Times Community News (TCN) is looking for a deputy editor to take on a management role overseeing the photo, design and multiplatform editing desks of its TimesOC publication in Orange County. This is a six-month temporary role with the potential of becoming permanent. Working closely with the editor of a sister publication, the Daily Pilot, this editorial manager will manage two reporters as well as the photo, copy, design and social media desks. The deputy editor will also help with line editing and assignments and coordinate closely with the Daily Pilot.

Highly desired is a capable editor with a keen ability to edit hard news, as well as features, food, arts and entertainment. The ideal candidate will be both a sharp line editor who can, when needed, step in and do layout and copy-editing shifts when those teams need a hand.
Responsibilities:
- Assign and edit local community coverage; ensure that reporting is attentive to detail, consistently accurate, delivered with high quality under constant deadlines and edited to conform with accepted journalistic techniques, ethical standards and Times style
- Publish multiple stories a day online and help book the print edition
- Occasionally design the print edition when the assigned page designer/copy editor is out of the office
- Provide continual feedback to employees on their performance and complete formal annual performance reviews
- Work with the Pilot editor to set a strategic course for the department that prioritizes digital development; grows audience, readership and digital subscriptions; and fulfills company goals
- Apply creativity to story generation, visual element generation and the presentation of news and information in the most relevant, interesting way
- Manage staff and freelance budgets and come in at or below annual spending targets
- Ensure that the department meets digital and print production deadlines and maintains ideal story flow
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Five or more years of editing or management experience at a community news publication or website.
- The ability to design pages (Newsgate/Cue experience a plus)
- Knowledge and commitment to the company's mission and strategy
- A nuanced understanding of audience data and analytics and a track record of using data to make informed decisions on coverage
- The ability to foster excellent communication with peers, supervisors, department and newsroom
- Maintaining up-to-date skills on various digital platforms and keeping abreast of current events and newsmakers in news, sports, culture and topic-area trends

The pay scale the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of the posting is $31.25 to $33.65 an hour and takes into account a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, experience, training, licenses, certifications, and other business or organizational needs. Compensation will be determined based on the above factors along with the requirements of the position. At the L.A.
