Based in Hartford, Connecticut, the Senior Counsel, Reinsurance will be a critical part of a team of attorneys responsible for supporting all aspects of reinsurance at The Hartford. This role will have primary responsibility for supporting the Reinsurance Center of Excellence within the Claim Organization, including all aspects of legal support for ceded and assumed reinsurance claims, coverage advice and managing outside counsel in formal disputes in arbitration and litigation. The Hartford has a significant portfolio of legacy liabilities as well as a vibrant global assumed reinsurance business, and varied outwards reinsurance collections covering its domestic business and Lloyd's syndicate. The Senior Counsel, Reinsurance, will have excellent communication skills, professional judgment, the ability to successfully resolve complex issues and the ability to lead cross-functional legal teams and external counsel.

This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near one of our office locationswill have the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.
Responsibilities:
- Provide and coordinate all aspects of legal support for reinsurance coverage advice and reinsurance mediations, arbitration and litigation across the enterprise.
- Advise on complex reinsurance cessions, including allocation and event/occurrence accumulation issues in legacy matters and ongoing U.S. & worldwide marine, property, credit and political risk, casualty, and aviation war.
- Review and advise on ceded and assumed reinsurance wordings, including policy and process work on standard wordings and exclusions.
- Partner effectively and collaborate with corporate and business leaders, Law Department colleagues, and other stakeholders to provide superior advice and counsel on reinsurance aspects of transactions, including M&A, captives, commutations, portfolio transfers, collateral instruments, administrative services agreements and NDAs.
- Assist in retention and management of external counsel on disputes and specialized matters where required.
- Advise on reinsurance regulatory and licensing matters under federal, state, and international regulatory frameworks, including U.S. and Canada.
- Monitor and report on industry and legal developments affecting reinsurance.
- Provide training to internal constituencies on key reinsurance issues.
Qualifications:
- Required minimum of six years' relevant insurance and reinsurance experience in private practice or a combination of private practice and in-house experience. Scope, seniority and compensation for the role may vary based upon the experience of the candidate.
- Experience with complex latent insurance coverage matters, including asbestos & environmental, including reinsurance disputes thereon, is required.
- Significant experience advising other lawyers, executives, and business colleagues; strong consultative skills and client orientation.
- Ability to evaluate and resolve issues in an expedient, successful and economical manner.
- Demonstrated superior analytical and critical thinking skills; strategic rather than reactive orientation.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; experience leading cross-functional teams; strong work ethic.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively communicate legal issues to non-lawyers.
- Juris doctorate (J.D.) required; must be admitted to practice law in Connecticut or must qualify as authorized house counsel in Connecticut.
- Some travel (less than 5%) as required for reinsurance dispute management.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$149,600 - $224,400
