The Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) department is responsible for exposure management, reporting, pricing, modeling and portfolio aggregation for enterprise catastrophe and other systemic risks. The Catastrophe Applied Research team is responsible for establishing the view of risk across all CAT perils through exposure data assessment, evaluation of vendor catastrophe models, development of internal models, claims analysis and other research activities.

The Senior CAT Modeler will have the responsibility of supporting vendor catastrophe model evaluation and calibration, in addition to leading various applied research projects that vary based on business needs. Applied research projects may include post-event claims deep dives, developing pricing solutions for non-modeled risks, developing concentration models, or producing blog posts and whitepapers on current climate topics. Explaining the models to the underwriters and business leaders, answering their questions and working closely with the business teams to understand potential challenges, is also a key part of this role.

Ideal Senior CAT Modeler has a Ph.D. in climate sciences or seismology with strong research/model building experience combined with knowledge of commonly used catastrophe models such as AIR and/or RMS. This position will work closely with internal Risk Officers, business leaders, underwriting leaders and our executive team providing critical insights and analysis shaping risk policy and business strategies across the enterprise.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in the Hartford, CT office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Responsibilities

  • Play a key role in natural peril, pandemic, and terrorism modeling and view of risk decisions
    • Evaluate and communicate model changes made by the vendor models or internal model assumptions and data updates
    • Assist with the development of our internal view of risk, including hazard scoring
    • Develop solutions to address model weaknesses if required to better align with internally developed, enterprise-wide view of risk
    • Develop internal models to price non-standard catastrophe exposures
  • Communicate model changes to business leaders in Underwriting, Product, and Actuarial
  • Use SQL and Tableau to summarize and visualize data and develop concentration models
  • Support research requests by business segments and executive leadership

Qualifications

  • PhD or other advanced degree in meteorology, hydrology, seismology, or related field required
  • 5+ years of work experience related to catastrophe risk management and modeling
  • Strong analytical and technical skills; proficiency in SQL, R, or other coding languages a plus
  • Experience working with commonly used catastrophe models including AIR and/or RMS
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

111,120 - 166,680

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
