The Hartford is seeking a Senior Underwriter to join our Cargo Team. Working here means having every opportunity to achieve your goals - and to help others accomplish theirs, too. Join our team as we help shape the future.

This role will be based in London, UK and you are required to have the necessary right to work details prior to application.

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Head of Cargo / Head of 1st Party Marine, London Market.
  • Works in close co-operation with team colleagues.
  • Partners with key stakeholders to achieve our strategic vision.

Job Responsibilities and Competence

  • Use authority granted in Underwriting Authority Statement to execute on the London Market Cargo business plan and assist in producing future business plans.
  • Develop and research business opportunities both through London Market brokers and Hartford International Offices.
  • Use technical expertise to enhance profitability of renewals and add profitable new opportunities to the book.
  • Keep abreast of development of claims within the Cargo book and to liaise with the claims team as necessary to ensure appropriate settlement of these claims.
  • Assist in further development of systems for the monitoring and reporting of aggregate exposures.
  • Help further develop and maintain technical pricing models.
  • Help report to management, on a monthly basis, of developments in the London market Cargo account towards business plan and budget. Contribute, as required, to the quarterly and annual reporting of underwriting results.
  • Participate as required in various committees, including underwriting, delegated underwriting, operations and risk.
  • Step up for Head of Cargo/ Head of 1st party marine as required.
  • Help to mentor and educate other team members as required.

  • To possess an in-depth knowledge of Cargo business.
  • Reasonable standard of education.
  • Ability to develop and sustain relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to prioritise and organise workload.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Team player with ability to work on a stand-alone basis.
  • Flexible.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Experience of identifying and implementing better processes.

Experience

  • Relevant experience working in the London Insurance market, specifically within the Cargo area.
