The Risk Engineering Chemist is responsible for conducting chemical analysis on submitted samples following recognized and approved methods while maintaining conformance to rigid quality assurance requirements. This role involves developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders such as Agents & Brokers, Claims, Underwriting, and National accounts. Leveraging their analytical experience of laboratory functions and customer-focused consultations, the Risk Engineering Chemist provides differentiating service to our insureds and business partners across the organization. Additionally, the role includes innovating and operationalizing new technologies to create efficiencies, expand scope, and capabilities.

This role will be based out of our Hartford, CT office and will require someone to be in the office Monday - Friday.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct chemical analysis on submitted samples following recognized and approved methods, maintaining conformance to rigid quality assurance requirements
  • Support Sr. Chemist/Forensic Chemist in analyses, project work, interpretation of data, providing assistance and support work.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, providing consultation to field Risk Engineering staff, insured clients, and external fee clients concerning materials, methods, and analytical results
  • Participate in assigned projects, task groups, and duties of importance to the lab, the department, or the corporation
  • Comply with accreditation standards and maintain strict ISO standards, including review and updates to current methods and SOPs.
  • Conform to the safety and chemical hygiene plans of the laboratory and applies chemical hazard knowledge to all operations.
  • Perform sample login for IH samples/forensic evidence and maintain Chain of custody.
  • Ability to develop new laboratory methods to support the scope of analysis.
  • Identify and investigate analytical problems and questionable results.
  • Conforms to the safety and chemical hygiene plans of the laboratory and applies chemical hazard knowledge to all operations.
  • Familiar with the basics of the profession of industrial hygiene and basic industrial processes that create occupational health risk.
  • Willing to proactively contact clients and initiate discussions when beneficial to the customer.
  • Understand industrial hygiene equipment usage and able to assist virtually in providing training to clients.
  • Become a subject matter expert for chemistry-related topics as they relate to laboratory methods, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Maintain additional roles as outlined by Laboratory accreditation (Chemical Safety Officer, LIMS Specialist, Deputy QA Manager, Deputy Technical Manager).
  • Analytical recordkeeping up to date and in conformance to QA/QC policies.
  • Willing to accept and embrace diverse tasks beyond the scope of chemical analyses.
  • Train/participate with lab technologists on sample prep/login/media prep.
  • Understand and assist in IT-related laboratory systems such as LIMS systems and instrument software.

Qualifications:

  • Four-year degree in applicable sciences with a B.S. and a minimum of 3 years of experience in related work.
  • Fully familiar with OSHA/NIOSH/ASTM sampling and analytical methods and any modifications unique to our lab.
  • Fully familiar with QA processes and exceptional attention to detail in all aspects.
  • Prepared to identify and investigate and analyze questionable results.
  • Willing to accept training from senior chemists and constructive criticism when offered.
  • Familiar with OSHA/NIOSH/ACGIH occupational exposure values and their inherent limitations.
  • Friendly, conversant nature recognizing the importance of the sample taker (the customer) to the laboratory.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$65,600 - $98,400
