As we continue to drive profitable growth through new business acquisition and portfolio management, our agency relationships need to thrive. This role will provide underwriting leadership and hold management responsibilities for our Middle Market/General Industries, Technology, and Life Science books of business for the Connecticut territory. This role will report directly to the Regional Vice President and will be a critical member of the leadership team. The selected individual will have expertise in Middle Market underwriting, service differentiation, and business development. The individual will also have the ability to manage direct and indirect reporting relationships, and have an excellent track record with the local agent/broker community.

Financial Performance
• Participates in the creation of annual and forward looking financial plans for the assigned underwriting team(s); Oversees local Connecticut underwriting team; Accountable for driving the targeted financial performance consistent with the department plans throughout the assigned underwriting team.
• Work closely with senior department leader to implement operating plans that adhere to underwriting goals and strategies which will position territory to continue to profitably grow
• Closely manages plan across the department and through coaching and direction, implements specific action to address financial and execution shortfalls

Distribution Management
• Direct client and broker interaction with a specific focus on national, large regional and local VIPs/Top Partners
• Maintain productive relationships with assigned distribution partners
• Responsible for building and maintaining relationships with Field Leaders throughout the assigned region to drive profitable growth of business
• Translate information regarding competitors' strengths, weaknesses and strategies to drive improvements and investments in sales execution and product offerings

Underwriting Execution
• Ensures that underwriting strategies supporting profitable growth (execution on underwriting, risk selection, etc.) are consistently followed throughout the assigned underwriting team
• Proactively implements corrective action as necessitated by macro business trends, regional issues, or individual performance challenges
• Takes a portfolio view of the business when making recommendations on individual accounts, product offerings or underwriting strategy

Leadership and Talent Development
• Establishes a pipeline of talent to support the attraction, selection and development of high caliber, diverse talent from within and/or outside the organization
• Participates in creation of strategic staffing plan to support the profitable growth of the business while also providing development opportunities for employees
• Responsible for managing and developing direct reports as well as working closely with the leadership team to ensure completion of meaningful development plans and the development of talent
• Completes effective annual performance reviews for staff; contributes to overall group compensation strategy.
• Drives accountability and ownership of group results to the Underwriters
• Executes on Employee Survey Action Items as a result of annual survey outcomes

Sales, Agency, and Underwriting Management

• Ensure functional and regulatory integrity of the book of business and overall compliance

with The Hartford's guidelines, policies, service standards and levels of authority. This

requires overseeing the Quality Analysis process and ensuring its effectiveness,

consistency, timeliness, and fairness.

• Coach Underwriters in the performance of their roles to ensure consistent practice of

Sales Excellence discipline and cross-sell across MLC & Global Specialty.

• Build strong, distinctive strategic partnerships with key agents and brokers

• Develop and implement segment sales plans with VIP's and Top Partners

Underwriting Execution

• Responsible for ensuring Core UW execution in accordance with guidelines and direction in partnership with DUO and referral team

• Ensuring underwriting health for regional book in accordance with quality

and compliance guidelines

• Monitors risk selection & pricing on regional portfolio to ensure profitable financial returns

Provides guidance on coverage, pricing, program structures and services offered in Core

business

• Enforces utilization of all UW tools (ADAPT, PACE, CUE, Policy Center, SFDC, etc.)

• Demonstrates masterly level understanding and utilization of UW & Sales reports

• Promotes utilization of services: Claims and Risk Engineering

Middle Market Underwriting Operations

  • Inspires team to achieve profit and growth objectives through risk selection, individual account pricing, mix of business, flow of business and management of quality analysis for the team.
  • Ensures technical underwriting knowledge guiding the actions of underwriters in writing and retaining quality business
  • Ensures that underwriting policies, practices and guidelines are understood and adhered to by the MM underwriting staff.
  • Provides ongoing technical development through coaching and QA results analysis
  • Driving consistency in underwriting routines and accountabilities that deliver proven results. These include pipeline & agency management, underwriting practices, client facing meetings, renewal retention strategies, service delivery and enterprise representation

People Leadership and Development

• Attracts, selects, and develops high caliber talent from within or outside of the organization

• Ensures staff continuity for key positions by anticipating and planning for future staffing needs

• Effectively manages staff through active performance management, implementation of a meaningful development process; builds a strong team which fosters collaboration, open dialogue and involves them in critical decision making and planning activities

• Closely manages plan results on an office wide and individual basis and directs implementation of specific actions to address business shortfalls in both profit and growth

We are looking for a strong candidate who will drive Sales, Marketing, Profit, Growth, and Quality of Middle Market business. The Managing Director leads the execution of the Middle Market Strategic and Operating plans within local market territories through strong agency/territorial management and leading a high-performance team focused on achievement, commitment and innovation, requiring a deep understanding of local market and competitors.

Qualifications:

Highly regarded for leadership capabilities; previous underwriting team management experience is a plus, as well as the following:

• 8+ years multi-line carrier underwriting experience in P&C Middle Market required

• Strong sales and negotiation skills; agency territorial management experience is a plus

• Solid financial / business acumen skills

• Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent in experience

• Proven track record of setting goals and delivering results.

• Drive and commitment to do what is necessary to get the job done efficiently, thoroughly and professionally.

• Demonstrated ability to drive business plans and achieve results

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$140,000 - $210,000
