Description

The Hartford is seeking an experienced litigator for a position as Managing Assistant General Counsel leading its Latent Property Damage Coverage Unit. This position heads a team of seven attorneys responsible for managing coverage litigation and pre-litigation coverage advice for high exposure long-tail property damage claims, including Construction Defect and Pollution claims. The successful candidate will have the ability to develop and implement litigation and coverage strategies for the most complex long-tail property damage matters, and be able to successfully manage a group of high-performing, experienced attorneys. This AVP position will also be responsible for reporting to and advising senior management, Underwriting and Actuarial partners, and other key stakeholders on high profile exposures and industry developments. This role is based in Hartford, CT on a hybrid basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Effectively manage a team of high-performing attorneys handling a large portfolio of latent property damage coverage matters.
  • Develop high-quality litigation strategies for individual cases and Company-wide exposures, while keeping in mind the impact on the Company's overall portfolio.
  • Vigorously pursue cost-effective, proactive and favorable resolutions of coverage disputes with policyholders and co-insurers.
  • Build strong, strategic partnerships with business colleagues in Claims, Underwriting and Actuarial, serving as the subject matter expert on latent property damage matters.
  • Supervise the selection and management of competent and cost-effective outside counsel and other litigation vendors.
  • Communicate effectively with senior leaders in Claims and Law on significant developments, both on individual cases and the broader legal environment.
  • Identify opportunities to improve legal and financial outcomes, claim behaviors, and internal and external processes based on legal trends and developments.
  • Implement equitable and inclusive management practices with attorneys, paralegals and administrative assistants, providing timely and candid coaching and feedback.
  • Some travel may be required.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of litigation and insurance claim experience with a demonstrated understanding of the strategic, financial, and operational levers that drive value creation in the insurance industry.
  • Exceptional analytical and critical thinking ability; sound legal judgment with the demonstrated ability to assess risk and offer practical legal strategies to achieve client objectives.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills; able to influence decisions, manage conflict, develop compelling business and legal arguments, and partner with senior executives in a way that reflects a deep understanding of business strategies and priorities as well as the applicable legal principles.
  • Demonstrated superior leadership skills, including the ability to communicate a strategic vision and to inspire, motivate and develop talent.
  • A confident leader with a strong collaborative orientation and the ability to build trusting relationships across a large organization.
  • A decisive self-starter who is able to work in a fast-paced environment and to manage change effectively.
  • Experience managing Construction Defect and Pollution coverage litigation is preferred.
  • Candidate must hold a JD degree and must be admitted to practice in Connecticut or be qualified as authorized house counsel in Connecticut.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$185,280 - $277,920
