The Hartford's Personal Lines IT Team is seeking a results-driven, highly motivated, and experienced IT Leader with experience leading engineering teams and having strong technical leadership skills. The Software Engineering Manager will have end-to-end accountabilities across the application portfolio. Successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate strong leadership skills, excellent partnership with stakeholders and partner teams, willingness to understand existing process and systems, solid technical acumen, experience in delivering quality technical solutions. Prior experience developing and managing Software Engineering workforce strategy.

Responsibilities:

  • Function as the go-to technical leader for the software applications developed/supported, requiring depth and breadth of knowledge in technologies, applications, integration, interfaces, and business domain.
  • Manage a team or teams of cross functional resources and establish a highly collaborative environment.
  • Hire, train, and develop talent for growth opportunities; monitors team/individual's morale and engagement to maintain highly effective and collaborative environments.
  • Establish OKRs and KPIs to set the engineering team's direction and measure its success.
  • Collaborate with teams to identify opportunities for integration across tools used in the Policy life cycle, including agile, test automation, platform configuration management (preferably Duck Creek or Guide Wire), and drive efficiencies.
  • Effectively and promptly communicate risks and issues and mitigations to stakeholders
  • Oversee technical deliverables, coaching and mentoring of junior developers and provide technical leadership for same, enforcing development guidelines and best practices. Foster an environment of experimentation and continual improvement through regular Innovation Sprints, technical debt reduction and a forward-thinking architectural runway.
  • Establish performance goals and career paths for the software engineering team and reinforce with timely coaching and feedback.
  • Function as a go-to technical leader for all the future technologies. Takes ownership to drive innovation for effectively leveraging modern technologies to solve the customer problem.

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in application software solution development along with managing software engineering teams.
  • Passion to stay current with relevant technology trends, experiment and learn modern technologies, participate in internal technology communities.
  • Strong understanding of Object-Oriented design and methodologies
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of Java or .NET based frameworks development techniques.
  • Experience in front end web technologies and frameworks like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, JSON, and Angular or React.
  • Exposure to cloud platform (preferable AWS) architecture and development
  • Experience with continuous integration and DevOps methodologies, preferred tools such as GitHub, Jenkins, Rally, SonarQube etc.,
  • Strategic planning, process analysis and execution skills for introducing evolving architecture-based solutions like Cloud, SaaS (Software as a Service), and open-source frameworks.
  • Experience working with cross-functional project teams using agile or scrum methodology.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to present confidently before a large audience.
  • Knowledge of P&C (Property & Casualty) Insurance is a plus.
  • Experience on low coding platforms like Duck Creek or Guidewire is a plus.
  • Knowledge of implementing solutions through Gen AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field preferred.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$129,120 - $193,680
