Manager of Software Engineering - Innovate with Us at The Hartford

Responsibilities:

  • Lead with Vision: Be the go-to technical leader for our software applications, leveraging your deep knowledge in technologies, applications, integration, interfaces, and business domains.
  • Communicate Effectively: Proactively communicate risks, issues, and mitigations to stakeholders.
  • Foster Collaboration: Manage cross-functional teams, creating a highly collaborative and engaging work environment. Collaborate to identify integration opportunities across policy lifecycle tools, driving efficiencies and innovation.
  • Develop Talent: Hire, train, and mentor team members, fostering growth opportunities and maintaining high morale and engagement.
  • Innovate and Guide: Oversee technical deliverables, mentor junior developers, and enforce best practices. Promote experimentation and continual improvement through Innovation Sprints and technical debt reduction.
  • Hands-On Coding: Lead teams while also performing hands-on coding to stay connected with the technical aspects of the projects.
  • Set Goals: Establish performance goals and career paths for the team, providing timely coaching and feedback.
  • Drive Success: Establish OKRs and KPIs to guide the engineering team's direction and measure success.
  • Embrace Future Technologies: Lead innovation efforts, leveraging modern technologies to solve customer problems.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: 8+ years in application software development and managing software engineering teams.
  • Tech Savvy: Passionate about staying current with technology trends, experimenting with modern technologies, and participating in internal tech communities.
  • Technical Skills: Strong understanding of Object-Oriented design, Java or .NET frameworks, front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, JSON, Angular/React), and cloud platforms (preferably AWS).
  • DevOps Knowledge: Experience with continuous integration and DevOps tools (GitHub, Jenkins, Rally, SonarQube).
  • Strategic Thinker: Skilled in strategic planning, process analysis, and executing architecture-based solutions like Cloud, SaaS, and open-source frameworks.
  • Agile Practitioner: Experience with agile or scrum methodologies.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Industry Knowledge: Knowledge of P&C Insurance and low coding platforms (Duck Creek, Guidewire) is a plus.
  • AI Enthusiast: Experience with Gen AI solutions is a plus.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field preferred.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$129,120 - $193,680
