The Hartford is seeking a Managing Director who will lead and manage our Large Property Central Division territory, bringing expertise in large property underwriting, including ground up and shared and layered business. The role involves leading a team of underwriters to meet production goals and implementing marketing strategies to grow our property book of business. The Large Property, Managing Director, Central Division, will be based in our Chicago, IL office and report to the Head of Business, Large Property.

Responsibilities:

Sales and Marketing

  • Maintain an active pipeline of property opportunities and utilize client and agent/broker relationships to market The Hartford's offerings.
  • Foster relationships with other divisions to collaborate and cross-sell.
  • Assess market opportunities and generate ideas to drive new business.

Underwriting / Product and Industry Expertise

  • Develop and implement underwriting standards, strategies, and product suites.
  • Underwrite property business and serve as a referral resource for other large property underwriters.
  • Handle referrals and provide direction on complex exposures.
  • Provide property subject matter expertise to business partners.
  • Apply underwriting guidelines and have thorough knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.

Distribution Management and Partnership

  • Manage and develop producer and client relationships, focusing on national broker contacts.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of compensation plans and drive initiatives that support compensation decisions.
  • Consult with producers and clients to answer questions and direct them to appropriate resources.

Leadership and Talent Development

  • Manage underwriting resources and ensure clear alignment with partner organizations.
  • Foster a high-performance culture and pipeline new talent.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 15 years industry experience, with 10+ years of Property underwriting experience preferred. Strong technical underwriting acumen and analytical skills.
  • Expertise in marketing and evaluating complex property risks.
  • Prior people leadership and management experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong presentation and marketing skills.
  • Thorough attention to detail and strong underwriting documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a matrixed environment.
  • Able and willing to travel ~25% of the time within territory on an ongoing basis; initial travel requirement (first 3- 6 months) may be slightly higher.
  • Bachelor's degree required, advanced degree a plus.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$144,000 - $216,000
