The Head of the Low Touch Underwriting Center will spearhead the transformation of Low End Underwriting across M&L Business at The Hartford to enable the achievement of ambitious M&L growth targets. This leader will play a crucial role in setting the strategic and operational priorities to include developing and leading innovative strategies that support growth and scale across M&L businesses, while maintaining efficiency. As the Low Touch Owner, this leader will enhance the end-to-end underwriting process with a strategic and operational focus to ensure quality and consistency in both new and renewal business.

Accountable for fostering a high-performance culture, this leader will enhance end-customer experience and workforce engagement. They will implement best practices, collaborate with M&L leadership and cross-functional teams, while utilizing data-driven insights to optimize processes and improve efficiency.
Reporting to the Head of Alternative Distribution and with matrix accountability to the General Industries Chief Underwriting Officer, this role requires deep industry knowledge, exceptional leadership, and the ability to manage and influence multiple stakeholders.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead Low End Underwriting Center of Excellence team:
• Lead the expansion and strategic growth of the Express Center of Excellence through addition of new business units and increased appetite to drive increased scale across M&L while maintaining underlying expense ratio. Includes the build and continued evolution of the Express Underwriting strategy, financial performance goals, organizational structure and operating model as well as development of cross-functional partnerships and influencing.
• Responsible for the profit and loss of the Low Touch book of business, inclusive of monitoring financial performance, defining roles, and using customer feedback, marketplace research and competitive intelligence to improve processes across multiple business units.
• Leadership of strategic and operational planning to drive innovation and efficiency into the end-to-end underwriting flow in partnership with Operations, Transformation, Information Technology, Data Science, and other functional leadership
o Anticipate and plan for emerging technologies to help drive improved business results and efficiencies; evolve operating model, underwriting processes and practices as appropriate while driving effective Change Management
• Foster talent development of the existing team while strategically planning for expansion and growth. This leader of leaders will be responsible for developing a pipeline of future underwriters and leaders for the enterprise, creating the opportunity for career pathing within the team and organization more broadly.
Underwriting Officer responsible for portfolio management and underwriting quality of Center of Excellence (CoE) and Middle Market Underwriting Center (MMUC):
• Ensure the functional and regulatory integrity of the book of business and overall compliance with The Hartford's guidelines, policies, service standards and levels of authority. This requires overseeing the Quality Analysis process and ensuring its effectiveness, consistency, timeliness, and fairness.
• Responsible for ensuring core underwriting execution in accordance with guidelines and direction set by M&L CUO, in alignment with line of business appetite and targeted rate and retention goals
• Serve as the referral resource for the Over Definition, Consolidation and Express Teams
• Support and advance new, innovative approaches to underwriting risk through data. Serve as the key leader for the project team associated with the implementation and application of our Triage Tools across the M&L book of business. They will be responsible for representing the underwriting voice of the field in the construction and implementation of the models across our book.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with BU Leaders, Actuary, Data Science, Ops, Underwriting Officers, the AI lead, IT, Global Specialty, and Small Commercial.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• 15+ years progressive experience in Middle Market underwriting, sales, and leadership.
• In-depth knowledge of Commercial Middle Market underwriting principles with CIC or CPCU designation (or progress toward such).
• Proven ability in building or significantly growing an organization, including establishing operating models, financial or other quantifiable goals, setting a clear vision and building team culture and followership.
• Demonstrated success in developing and driving strategy, including an ability to understand customer needs, identify growth and operational improvement opportunities, and develop innovative marketing strategies and creative customer solutions.
• Proven ability to influence at various levels, manage multiple stakeholders, and lead in a matrixed environment.
• Proven decision-making skills including an ability to exercise sound business judgment, leverage market and competitor intelligence, apply financial acumen and negotiate for success.
• A commitment to operational excellence including an ability to hold others accountable, establish priorities, execute business processes and build customer-focused service processes.
• Proven ability to lead large teams including building and communicating vision, driving an engaged, inclusive culture and workforce, effectively leading change, and coaching and developing key skills required to promote a high-performance culture.

Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$200,000 - $300,000
