The Head of Ceded Reinsurance leads a team of experienced professional in the assessment, design and implementation of reinsurance strategies. Success in the role is achieved by maintaining consistent, broad protection that is durable over time and priced at a level that minimizes expected ceded margin. Key activities: strong leadership and performance management of direct reports; managing internal and external relationships; strong communication; detailed command of facts across The Hartford's portfolio of businesses and portfolio of ceded contracts; and strong negotiating. As the highly visible point person for a ceded portfolio of >$1.4 billion, it is critical that the person in the role embodies The Hartford's behaviors and is recognized as an ethical trader with an unerring moral compass. The Head of Ceded Reinsurance is responsible for Commercial, Consumer and Group Benefits Markets, including the retro cover for Global Re, working collaboratively with segment leadership. The Heade of Ceded Re also drives collaboration with all functions (claim, law, accounting, regulatory) to ensures the accurate and professional administration of ceded reinsurance placements and partner relationships.

Key Responsibilities:
• Oversee the placement and orderly renewal of all reinsurance contracts and bond sponsorships, including both treaty and facultative reinsurance.
• Manage a team of highly skilled reinsurance professionals, providing the team the tools and guidance to successfully meet placement objectives.
• Collaborate with segment leadership and ELT to design reinsurance structures. Periodically assess the risk profile of The Hartford's portfolios to perform a zero-based analysis of reinsurance needs, ensuring that The Hartford is purchasing the most efficient set of protections based on our capital and risk position.
• Establish and manage strong internal partnerships to ensure best practices with law, claim, finance and accounting on all reinsurance matters.
• Negotiate the most favorable terms of placement - dealing with both brokers and, when impactful, reinsurers on a transactional level; complete all internal documentation, including risk transfer testing; ensure timely documentation; establish timelines that maximize The Hartford's optionality on all key decisions.
• Manage all external reinsurance relationships, including reinsurance brokers and reinsurers, serving as the primary contact for specific treaties and general industry matters. Establish marketing protocols and create personal relationships that help ensure diversified placements with reinsurers of strong counter-party credit and consistent trading behavior.
• Determine the most effective broker assignment for each placement, weighing the multiple objectives of The Hartford.
• Proactively identify issues with reinsurers or brokers in a collaborative fashion to ensure the longevity of The Hartford's relationships.
• Collaborate with ERM on all reinsurance security approval and monitoring efforts.
• Leverage personal network to gather intelligence on market conditions.
• Make final decisions on individual reinsurers' bound shares on each treaty.
• When required represent the company on external reinsurance matters.
• Ensure all reinsurance activities comply with regulatory requirements and internal policies.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor's degree in mathematics, actuarial science, finance, or a related field.
• A strong numerate, statistical fluency.
• Meaningful experience in buying or selling reinsurance; including strong contacts within the reinsurance treaty broking community.
• Demonstrated success in managerial leadership assignments.
• Related certifications are a plus, e.g. ACAS, FCAS, CPCU, Are.
Demonstrated Leadership and Relationship Management capabilities:
• Manage and deepen relationships; successfully negotiate at a high level to successful outcomes; successfully resolve conflict to 'win-win' outcomes.
• Simultaneously manage multiple projects and staff.
• Regularly (constantly) provide feedback, enabling direct reports to continuously improve.
• Communicate goals, provide a supportive environment to achieve goals, hold teammates accountable, celebrate and share success, and provide a supportive developmental environment.
Analytical and Financial Skills:
• Extensive experience in reinsurance, including structures, contracts, back-office administration (accounting and claims) and nuances of underlying coverages; proven experience in understanding the drivers of decision-making for reinsurers.
• In-depth understanding of financial strength and operational standards for evaluating the counter-party credit of reinsurers.
• Strong analytical skills to evaluate the economic efficacy of various reinsurance structures, including various statistical methods of assessment.
• Demonstrated ability to understand and assess the impacts from various reinsurance types and structures to insurance company GAAP financial statements.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong powers of observation.
• Comfort level operating across functional areas and levels of seniority.
• Ability to communicate complex structures and concepts in a crisp, effective fashion - in both small, informal groups as well as formal settings (e.g. quarterly report to ELT).
• Strong empathy to facilitate a supportive environment for direct reports and colleagues.
Ability required to travel a couple times a year internationally to Bermuda and London in addition 4-6 times a year to Stamford and NYC.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$252,000-$378,000
