Emerging Technology & Innovation is dedicated to data-driven innovation at The Hartford. The team focuses on enhancing the value of our insurance portfolio by evaluating new, cutting-edge technologies, methods, and insurtech products; prototyping AI models and uses; and supporting business partners in leveraging AI to drive process and product improvements.

The Hartford seeks an energetic and passionate Director of Data Science to lead ideation, design, and demonstration of solutions modernizing and transforming our operations and business. This position will bring domain expertise in areas such as deep learning, NLP, image recognition, generative AI, statistical or probabilistic modeling, and data visualization. In this role, you will lead a team working in a fast-paced, open-ended environment with cutting edge technologies in deep learning and generative AI. You'll help define and influence how our firm's data scientists and business teams leverage data and machine learning to improve our processes and products.

This person will collaborate with senior leaders, business partners and data science teams from across the enterprise to support and influence further adoption of AI at The Hartford. Success will depend on your ability to break down and solve the problems of business and technical stakeholders, quickly delivering valuable prototypes and recommendations.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office (Chicago, IL, Hartford, CT or Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of data scientists, data engineers, and asset owners in researching and building out experimentations around emerging technologies and capabilities in artificial intelligence.
  • Engage with technical and business stakeholders to define and design solution concepts.
  • Lead ideation, development, and prioritization of a backlog of emerging technologies, techniques, and capabilities to fuel future experimentation and work efforts.
  • Lead the design and implementation of rapid protypes and complex technological Proofs of Concept.
  • Identify and assess the value of new data sources and analytical techniques to ensure ongoing competitive advantage.
  • Remain current on data science and machine learning techniques and state-of-the-art tools.

Qualifications:

  • Master's or PhD with 7+ years of relevant experience as a data scientist, applied scientist, or machine learning engineer. An additional 3 years of work experience may be substituted for an advanced degree.
  • Desired educational experience includes but is not limited to: Computer Science, Quantitative Economics, Mathematics, and Physics.
  • Understanding of current and emerging IT products, services, processes and methodologies.
  • Experience in the following disciplines: scripting languages (ex: python), SQL (ex: Oracle, PL/SQL), and cloud and big data environments (ex: AWS, GCP, Azure, Hadoop)
  • Analytical approach with a strong ability to uncover and resolve problems by delivering innovative approaches and solutions.
  • Self-motivated, strong sense of ownership/accountability, and results oriented with the ability to manage time and schedules effectively
  • Natural curiosity with a strong desire to learn, maintain, and apply knowledge of emerging technologies
  • Understanding of Agile and CI/CD
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills with ability to effectively communicate with senior management.
  • Passion for learning new skills and the ability to adjust priorities on multiple projects based on changing demands/needs
  • Candidate must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 3+ years' experience as a team lead or people manager
  • Experience in innovation, producing and rapidly delivering a minimally viable product with a "fail-fast" approach
  • Experience in one or more of: GIS, NLP, agentic architectures, transformer models, diffusion models, and/or deep learning
  • Experience with some or all of the following: solutions architecture, MLOPs, SDLC, product design, product development
  • Knowledge of Property & Casualty and/or Group Benefits Insurance business
  • Experience with presenting and communicating with executive leadership

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$153,200 - $229,800
