Enterprise Data Services - Director, Data Architecture

As a Director of Data Architecture, you collaborate and build positive relationships with business leads and technology product teams, across business units, to drive our data architectures and technology patterns for key data management and analytic capabilities. You blend deep expertise and experience in engineering, technical design, systems, and data management with a passion for coaching and mentoring engineering associates.

You will bring industry standard methodologies, perform research on industry trends and lead tool evaluation efforts, including Proof-of-Concepts. In an agile structure, you will partner with other business, architecture, and product leaders to establish the standards for your Line of Business and influence the strategic decisions, solution development and work priorities.

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office location (Hartford, CT; Charlotte, NC; Chicago, IL; Columbus, OH) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drive the data architecture technology vision to support the data modernization journey and enable next generation capabilities in our data ecosystem.
  • Translate business objectives into technical solutions, with supporting implementation artifacts, that are aligned to Business Strategy, Data Strategy, and Enterprise Technology Standards.
  • Define, publish, and evangelize architectural patterns and standards for reusable data components and frameworks.
  • Design and implement highly scalable, secure, and performant data architectures and data pipelines leveraging cloud technologies and modern data frameworks.
  • Stay abreast on emerging technologies and provide recommendations to advance our portfolio of data-driven capabilities, optimize for cost efficiency, and improve automation.
  • Lead Proof-of-Concepts in partnership with data engineering, data platform and security teams to validate proposed data designs and solutions for fit in the Enterprise Technology Strategy.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Enterprise Architects, Application Architects, Data Engineers, Platform Engineers (Data), Testers, and Data Engineering leadership.
  • Design end-to-end solution for new and migrating data assets including current and target state architecture, option analysis, High availability, Disaster recovery for on-premises, cloud, and SaaS workloads.
  • Participate in or lead an Architecture Community of Practice that advances the discipline of data architecture and data management by driving alignment across teams to embrace standardized patterns & practices.
  • Mentor Senior Data Architects, fostering a culture of continuous learning and rapid experimentation while evangelizing best practices and Enterprise standards.
  • Perform routine design and architecture governance review process to assess design quality, architecture standards, validate adherence to Enterprise patterns, and coach senior data architects and data engineer on best practices.
  • Partner with platform engineering teams for tools and technology recommendation, capacity planning and workload optimizations to ensure data systems can handle data volumes (current and future) and workloads efficiently.
  • Partner with Data Engineering and Data Platform leadership to design and implement processes and observability tooling that can be used to monitor data quality and availability to ensure that data is accurate, available for stakeholders, and supports proactive issue resolution.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Computer Science, Data Analytics, Engineering, or related discipline
  • 10+ years of experience in architecture, design, and development in a large-scale, complex data ecosystem
  • 5+ years of technical leadership experience (e.g., Technical Manager/Lead, Senior Engineer)
  • 5+ years of experience with Python
  • 5+ years of experience with Snowflake (or other cloud-based data warehouse platform)
  • Experience modernizing data architectures and leading cloud migrations

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with the following technologies: Snowflake, PySpark, Informatica IDMC, Tableau, and ThoughtSpot
  • Experience in Group Benefit Insurance industry
  • Experience with Design thinking

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$138,080 - $207,120
