The Director & Assistant Actuary role on the Group Benefits Actuarial Pricing team is critical to supporting the Supplemental Health products offered by The Hartford - Critical Illness insurance, Accidental Injury insurance and Hospital Cash insurance. The candidate will have the unique opportunity to work on these products that are still relatively new to the employer group market and are continually evolving. The candidate will also have frequent interaction with different functional areas of Group Benefits including Underwriting, Product, Compliance and Sales.

This role is an integral part of the Supp Health pricing team and has primary responsibility for manual rate development, rate/compliance filings, experience analysis, pricing tool Actuarial ownership, and pricing and consultative support for Underwriting team. By owning these responsibilities, the candidate will have the opportunity to grow their network, develop valuable business skills and learn tremendously about the Supp Health products.

  • Gain an in-depth understanding of Group Critical Illness, Accidental Injury and Hospital Cash insurance to provide pricing support for the business, predominantly for employer group benefits with some exposure to association markets.
  • Strengthen both written and verbal communication skills through contact with Actuarial peers and leadership as well as several internal business partners.
  • Develop cross-functional relationships with UW, Product, Compliance and Sales.
  • Hone problem solving, analytical and technical skills through involvement in primary responsibilities as well as various ad hoc requests.
  • Strengthen adaptability, flexibility, and ability to manage and prioritize dynamic workflow.

Major Responsibilities of This Role Include:

  • Conduct pricing research and contribute to product development efforts as Supp Health business continues to grow, innovate, and mature.
  • Analyze historical claims experience as part of annual target setting to determine pricing actions.
  • Oversee additional pricing efforts to refine and update rate manuals for Supp Health lines.
  • Lead rate filing projects and compliance related filings for Supp Health products.
  • Support the update of Supp Health op-plan analysis and communicate results.
  • Lead the maintenance and continuous improvement of multiple Excel-based pricing tools used by underwriters to manually rate Critical Illness, Accidental Injury and Hospital Cash products.
  • Support data enhancements and updates for Supp Health products in WARP (Actuarial datamart) and ThoughtSpot reporting on GBDash.
  • Partner with Underwriting and Product to provide appropriate risk charges for ad hoc pricing requests.
  • Oversee preparation of the quarterly experience review of Supp Health business to monitor the loss ratio trends.
  • Assist with minimum loss ratio monitoring for both employer and association markets.
  • Manage a rotational Actuarial student.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree is required.
  • Attainment of actuarial designation (FSA, ASA, FCAS) is required.
  • 3-5+ years of actuarial related work and progressively increasing responsibilities.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively communicate results in written, oral and presentation format.
  • Excellent analytic, quantitative, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a cross functional team as well as exert influence while participating in large group projects.
  • Proven ability to develop relationships with key business partners.
  • Knowledge of Supplemental Health or Group Benefits pricing preferred.
  • Management experience preferred.

Location:

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in The Hartford's Hartford, CT office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$129,360 - $194,040
