This position can be a Director & Actuary or a Director & Assistant Actuary depending on the skills and experience of the candidate.
This position is a key Director role within the Actuarial Reserving department, supporting latent liability reserving studies for asbestos, environmental, and other mass tort exposures as well as the future re-assumed reinsurance review. The position manages two direct reports and includes presenting study findings to actuarial leadership. In addition, the role will be involved in various cross-team and individual projects, digging into emerging issues and trends, and enhancing the team's processes. The position will work closely with the claims and legal organizations to help achieve successful account resolutions and to become a leading source of knowledge on our latent liability exposures. The individual should have strong technical and analytical skills, be able to communicate effectively across technical and non-technical audiences, and be able to influence business partners.

Responsibilities:
• Lead annual Mass Tort (including asbestos and liability) and future re-assumed reinsurance reserve reviews and report findings to actuarial leadership
• Become an expert regarding latent liability exposures, emerging mass torts, and the claim handling and legal considerations affecting large general liability losses
• Support ad hoc requests for account-specific modeling and analysis in support of settlement activity
• Conduct sophisticated actuarial analyses and effectively communicate findings and recommendations to business partners and actuarial leadership
• Drive and enhance the partnership between Actuarial, Claims, and Legal teams
• Manage, coach, and develop two direct reports, including accountability for their performance and professional development.
• Contribute to department-wide initiatives
Qualifications:
• 4+ years of experience with FCAS, career ACAS, or expertise in latent liability exposure evaluation
• Management experience preferred but not required
• Very strong technical and data skills; must be proficient in Excel and able to learn new software tools such as R, ResQ, TM1 etc.
• Must be a thought leader; demonstrate analytical skills and offer creative solutions to business questions; exhibit a process efficiency/improvement mindset
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to audiences of various levels and diverse technical backgrounds.
• Strong leadership skills; ability to develop strong working relationships and the ability to interact with and influence our business partners
• Project management and teamwork skills including ability to effectively collaborate with individuals at different organizational levels; flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing priorities
• Self-motivated and results-oriented with the ability to manage time effectively by prioritizing and delegating in an environment with multiple priorities.
Location:
This role can have a Hybrid or Remote work arrangement. Candidates who live near one of our office locations will have the expectation of working in an office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday). Candidates who do not live near an office will have a remote work arrangement, with the expectation of coming into an office as business needs arise.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$132,720 - $221,160
The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
