The Business Compliance group is seeking a talented professional to join their Team as an Assistant Director, Middle & Large Commercial / Global Specialty Compliance. This team is closely partnered with the Commercial Lines insurance business units and provides a wide array of legal & regulatory compliance support, including:
- Advice relating to product development, rate and form filings, and underwriting practices;
- Management of all regulatory inquiries;
- Implementation of changes to business practices, processes, and/or products in response to legislative and regulatory developments;
- Research or other support needed in connection with strategic business initiatives.

As the main point of contact for all federal & state regulatory matters related to their assigned business units, the Assistant Director will regularly coordinate with Law Department colleagues (e.g. Privacy Law, Government Relations, Enterprise Transactions, Litigation) and other areas of the Enterprise to provide creative and practical solutions to our clients.
The Assistant Director will be expected to provide a wide range of regulatory compliance support for multiple complex business units, including our UK-based business and global reinsurance practices. The Assistant Director will establish relationships and work closely with business clients at all levels, proactively mitigate key regulatory issues, and provide thoughtful and risk-balanced advice on a variety of matters.
This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office in Hartford, CT or Charlotte, NC 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Responsibilities:
- Direct and manage regulatory exams and other regulatory inquiries in a manner that builds confidence within the regulatory community and protects The Hartford.
- Develop and execute compliance audit programs to proactively identify organizational vulnerabilities and develop strategies for ensuring future compliance.
- Develop and apply subject matter expertise to complex insurance issues and other regulatory matters.
- Analyze regulatory requirements across multiple jurisdictions; provide business clients with practical and actionable advice.
- Identify potential regulatory issues in business initiatives; offer thoughtful, creative solutions that are appropriate for the level of risk involved.
- Effectively communicate with a wide range of business clients, including senior leaders.
- Advocate for client interests to state regulators and other external parties.
- Demonstrate well-developed communication skills and sound, independent judgment.
Qualifications:
- J.D. from accredited law school preferred (but not required)
- A minimum of five+ years of experience with Commercial Lines insurance and reinsurance products. Experience with the International/London insurance market is preferred.
- Strong research & critical thinking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills; ability to build effective working relationships with internal colleagues, business clients, and others at all levels of the organization.
- Experience working with senior level clients and/or business leaders.
- Collaborative; team player.
- Self-motivated, resourceful, and capable of independent decision-making.
- Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, and enjoy working across a breadth of subject matter, intellectually curious.
- Excellent project management skills and ability to effectively manage multiple urgent competing priorities.
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$98,560 - $147,840
