Actuarial Analyst

We are looking for someone pursuing the SOA designation to join our Actuarial Leadership Development program with a starting rotation in our ERM group.

The Catastrophe Management unit supports risk management activities to control losses from $3 billion of countrywide catastrophe-exposed written premium, with gross catastrophic loss potential from an extreme natural catastrophe of $6 billion to $8 billion. This unit supports Personal and Commercial markets with respect to catastrophe management planning and related activities.

The Catastrophe Risk Analyst will primarily work with databases and models to assess and monitor corporate exposures to natural catastrophe perils (e.g. wildfire and tornado/hail) including working with internal and external catastrophe model results to assess vulnerability to catastrophic loss events. This position will assist segments in the development of catastrophe control plans that address the risk through underwriting programs and allocation of corporate capacity, produce quarterly/monthly monitoring reports, and ensure communication and integration of cat control programs into the operating and strategic plan processes for property/casualty/cyber lines of business with catastrophic loss potential.

Additionally, the position will support peer analysis for insurance lines of business. This position will interact with a variety of areas, including Office of the Chief Underwriter (OCUO), Corporate Actuarial and each Business Segment.

  • Expand knowledge of/experience with SQL and Tableau.

Major responsibilities of this rotation include:

Catastrophe Control Plan Support:

  • Participate in the development of risk management tools and processes needed to control the exposure to catastrophic loss.
  • Assist with quarterly reporting of key risk metrics, including updating exhibits and creating new ones, and researching significant changes in exposure, loss, and premium
  • Produce monthly and quarterly wildfire exposure reporting using Tableau, including investigating large swings in exposure and HIG market share position
  • Provide support for actual "event" response such as Underwriting holds and market share estimates.
  • Participate in developing new reporting for monitoring natural perils using Tableau
  • Assist with research of key drivers of property loss and aid in model development for new lines with non-modeled CAT exposure Support the Catastrophe Risk Management organization by completing projects or adhoc requests related to aggregations, risk optimization, emerging risk, or portfolio modeling. Peer Company Analysis
  • Quarterly peer analysis by line of business for The Hartford peer companies, including loss ratio trends and analysis of reported earnings of peer companies
  • Annual update of peer metrics in Tableau using data from SNL for The Hartford peer companies on a countrywide and state level basis by line of business on loss ratio, combined ratio, and premium trends
  • Provide insights to help identify opportunities for growth and profitability potential based on peer analysis
  • Review insurance news to identify trends and noteworthy developments in the industry

This role will be part of our Actuarial Leadership Development program allowing for paid study time, Exam bonuses and rotational opportunities.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

72,400 - 108,600

The posted salary range reflects our ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
