Job Overview

MOVA is seeking mission-driven, trauma-informed advocates with direct service or social service experience to join our Victim Compensation team. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Victim Compensation, Eligibility and Outreach Specialists review applications for eligibility from victims of violent crime seeking compensation for expenses directly related to the crime according to the Massachusetts General Laws c. 258C and the related regulations. Specialists help victims understand their rights as crime victims, eligibility requirements for Victim Compensation, explain what expenses may be eligible for compensation, and assess additional resources that may be available to assist them. Specialists also serve as liaisons to the victim services field including building relationships, conducting outreach and training, and providing information and assistance to crime victims and their families. Eligibility and Outreach Specialists must be advocacy-oriented, effective communicators, and process driven and have experience building and maintaining trusting relationships with diverse stakeholders, serving as liaisons, and providing exceptional customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advocacy to ensure equitable access to claimants seeking victims' compensation
  • Using the case management system, review and confirm eligibility of applications filed for Victim Compensation under M.G.L. c. 258C
  • Research and outreach to various law enforcement and protective service agencies and courts for information needed to assess eligibility
  • Communicate with victims regarding the status of their application and provide assistance, advocacy, and referrals to other victim services
  • Assist in responding to calls and people walking into MOVA's office seeking assistance and information
  • Serve as MOVA's liaison to law enforcement agencies, victim service providers, and community programs, building strong relationships
  • Conduct statewide outreach and training for various agencies and organizations regarding Victim Compensation
  • Collaborate with the Victim Services team to connect victims and survivors to additional resources and referrals
  • Serve as a resource to the community in matters related to victim rights and services

  • Non-managerial, non-exempt positions
  • Salary of $65,000 annually
  • These positions require working in a MOVA office four days a week for an initial training period of at least six months. Upon successful completion of the training period, these positions are hybrid.
  • There are two positions available. One position is based in MOVA's Boston office and one position is based in MOVA's Northampton office.
  • These positions require frequent travel to Boston for the training period and occasional travel throughout MA, including to both of MOVA's offices


Qualifications

  • Minimum of four years of relevant professional work experience; a degree may substitute for up to two years of professional work experience
  • Prior experience providing trauma informed assistance and demonstrated resilience in work that includes exposure to vicarious trauma
  • Experience interacting directly with individuals seeking services or assistance preferably in criminal justice, social service, or medical systems
  • Knowledge of victim rights, services, and the criminal justice system
  • Commitment to furthering MOVA's mission
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills including public speaking and experience creating and delivering presentations
  • Proven ability to maintain confidential information
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Exceptional attention to detail and overall organizational skills
  • Ability to establish and meet deadlines consistently and effectively problem-solve
  • Demonstrated ability to be a collaborative team player, take initiative, be self-motivated, resourceful, and flexible
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse communities and ensure a culturally relevant and sensitive approach
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to communicate to victims and survivors in Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, or Mandarin strongly preferred
  • These positions require working in a MOVA office four days a week for an initial training period of at least six months. Upon successful completion of the training period, these positions are hybrid.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel within Massachusetts
