Job Description

Duties:

  • Teach academic classes as assigned by supervisor including ABE, ESL, PreASE and/or ASE. Classes may be departmentalized to include Reading, Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
  • Utilize research-based practices, current instructional methods, and current materials to ensu
  • re effective instruction.
  • Possess the ability to teach in a correctional setting and interact with an adult incarcerated population with possible medical, psychosocial, or educational deficits.
  • May be expected to work evening hours as operationally necessary.
  • Work with Education Division and administration staff to deliver specialized instruction in a secure setting.
  • Responsible for completing student attendance daily and updating inmate case plan as required by Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) including the awarding of Earned Good Time and completing performance ratings on time each month and time sensitive documentation for program completion as directed in SOP.
  • Responsible for completing the required 40 hours of training within the fiscal year as well as maintaining current teaching license.
  • Administers standardized testing to inmates including TABE, TABE CLAS-E, Hiset and Hiset qualifying exams as needed.
  • Maintains inmate education files: perform monthly purge, process incoming and outgoing files, and update inmate educational documentation as needed.
  • Identifies and recruits potential inmate class participants when necessary.
  • Schedules inmates for academic testing and meets with inmates to determine appropriate placement as needed.
  • Determines inmate eligibility for placement in educational programming based on program participation history, current assessment scores, program requirements and interest as needed.
  • Maintains and reviews educational program waitlists as needed.
  • Addresses inmate Case Plan referrals to academic and vocational programming within 30 days as needed.
  • Utilizes an informed understanding of current educational assessments to provide educational instruction.
  • Responsible for maintaining a record of professional development and DOC trainings attended.
  • Illustrating a comprehensive and current knowledge of DOC policies and procedures.
  • Engaging in Division priorities to enhance the progression of strategic goals, and collaborating with other professionals, both inside and outside of the Education Division, to contribute to the goals of the Division.
  • Expected to interact and communicate with staff and inmates in a professional manner while utilizing appropriate boundaries at all times.
  • Responsible for reporting any security related matters to their supervisor promptly in addition to managing their assigned classroom in a manner consistent with institutional rules and regulations.
  • Responsible for any other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants must have at least a Bachelor's Degree.

Knowledge of principles, methods, and practices in adult education. Working knowledge of educational tests and assessments. Ability to work with inmates, teaching staff and administration. Experience teaching content (ABE, ESL, PreASE, and/or ASE). Experience teaching adult learners.

Special Requirements: Possession of appropriate Teacher's Certificate issued by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
