Division Overview:

The Tax Administration Division is responsible for fostering voluntary compliance and narrowing the tax gap by identifying, educating, and auditing noncompliant taxpayers. The Tax Administration Division audits the tax returns of businesses and individuals filed, including sales/use, meals, rooms occupancy and special fuels, are subject to examination by the Tax Administration Division staff.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Conduct field audits of businesses primarily located in Western MA and Central MA areas, with exposure to one or more transaction taxes.

• Verifies compliance with Alcohol Beverage, Fuels, Cannabis, Tobacco, Sales/Use Tax and Meals Tax statutes to determine that the correct tax due has been reported on taxpayers' returns.

• The Tax Auditor may also verify that the gross receipts of the entity that is being audited have been properly reported. If the correct tax has not been reported the auditor will initiate any changes that may be required in accordance with the Massachusetts General Laws, and established policies and procedures.

• Properly documents all proposed changes through the development of schedules, reconciliations, reports, etc., confers with the taxpayer and/or their legal representatives to discuss and explain all findings developed on audit and completes audits and case files in a professional and timely manner adhering to all applicable policies and procedures.

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days .

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time professional experience in accounting, auditing, or tax examination, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitution below.

Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment.

Substitution:

I. A Bachelor's degree or higher degree in accounting, finance, or business administration may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

II. A Graduate degree in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for three years of the required experience.
