The Department of Fire Services (DFS) Facilities department provides maintenance, construction, landscaping and mechanical repairs to a robust state government agency providing firefighter training and emergency response. DFS is currently seeking dependable, hardworking individuals for year-round, part-time positions averaging 25-27 hours per week. The shifts are daytime, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend coverage required.

This position requires a knowledge of many different types of maintenance including painting, carpentry, and general building maintenance. Candidates will be responsible for snow removal during days, nights, and weekends. Candidates should highlight, in their application, all of their specific trade licenses, certifications or specialties. The position will perform the following job duties:

  • Provide support and assistance for programs at the DFS facilities and/or off-site at various communities across the Commonwealth.
  • Set-up and/or operate fire equipment, hazardous materials equipment, training props, grounds & maintenance equipment, and/or other specialized equipment.
  • Provide support by cleaning, inspecting, inventorying, diagnosing mechanical issues, performing preventative maintenance, repairing, or otherwise putting equipment, props, machines, buildings and/or structures into service.
  • Participates in heavy manual labor including but not limited to the loading and unloading of trucks and trailers, moving and setting up various equipment and/or training props, maintaining hydrants and pumps, and/or carry lumber or other materials & supplies.
  • Perform related duties such as transporting equipment to other locations, using powered and hand tools, maintaining the cleanliness of the warehouse, vehicles and/or other work areas.
  • Assist in snow removal and other storm related mitigation activities to ensure the operational needs can be meet.
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather, lift and carry heavy objects, and may work on ladders or scaffolds
  • May be required to assist in the repair, rebuilding or fabricating of training props and/or specialized equipment.
  • May be required to assist in the repair of office furniture, perform rough carpentry jobs, and file, sand, repair and sharpen tools.
  • May be assigned to drive delivery vehicles, backhoes, swap loaders, dump trucks and/or other heavy duty vehicles.

All persons holding a commercial driver's license (CDL) and who perform duties requiring a CDL for the Department of Fire Services, whether temporarily or permanently, at any time will be required to undergo controlled substances and at our discretion, alcohol testing prior to employment and will be subject to further testing throughout their period of employment.

Qualifications

Qualifications - External

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Two years' experience in a facilities maintenance, mechanical or technical trade or as a firefighter or a MA Hazardous Materials Technician.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License and good driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possession of a current and valid Hoisting Engineer's 2A Excavating License
  • Demonstrated manual dexterity, physical stamina and endurance
  • Ability to properly lift, carry, and otherwise move extremely heavy fire and rescue training props, equipment and supplies
  • Skilled in using small hand tools, power tools, and motorized equipment
  • Knowledge and experience with grounds & maintenance equipment
  • Able to take direction and follow instructions without deviating from planned program objectives
  • Mechanical ability and experience repairing nozzles, valves, appliances, and other equipment used in the fire service
  • Able to accomplish assigned work with little or no supervision
  • Able to make decisions based on good judgment and in the best interest of DFS
