Agency Overview
The Division of Local Services is responsible for ensuring fairness and equity in local property taxation, overseeing local accounting and treasury management, interpreting state laws that affect local governance, distributing monthly local aid to cities, towns and school districts, maintaining a comprehensive municipal finance data warehouse, and providing municipal financial management consulting services and training.
Bureau/Division Overview
The Financial Management Resource Bureau advises municipalities on opportunities to improve their financial management operations. Our project management team Bureau provides a wide range of published guidance, presentations, training, tools and project-based consulting services.

Position Summary
The Data Analyst Intern is responsible for providing consultation, instruction and project support to our team and municipalities on data and visualization projects. Primary duties include preparing and maintaining data; performing analysis that contributes to the bureaus training, guidance and tool for local officials; and conducting ad hoc analysis and data visualizations to support the team. This is an opportunity to be a key player in transforming how we gather and visualize information and drive impactful projects in municipal finance.
Core Responsibilities
Collaborate with the team to produce data visualizations and build financial dashboard tools for municipalities; help the team effectively communicate findings using data; support the team by gathering feedback from municipalities to continually improve the products and tools we create; support the design, layout, and illustration of communication materials, including reports and presentations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of PowerBI, Inforgram, ArcGIS and Excel
As part of the Future of Work Initiative, the agency has adopted a hybrid work model. Hybrid work is a mix of in-office work and telework. This position will work remotely some days and in-person on other days.
An external candidate recommended for a position with the Department of Revenue will be subject to a background check that includes checks for: state and federal tax compliance; child support compliance; education verification; Massachusetts CORI checks; criminal background checks in state(s) of current and previous residence/employment; validation of eligibility to work in the United States; and national fingerprint-based criminal background checks.
