Job Description

The Veterans Home at Chelsea is dedicated to providing high quality care and services to the Commonwealth's Veterans. As Steam Firefighter, this role will operate, monitor, and maintain steam boilers and auxiliary equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable power plant operations. You will be responsible for regulating fuel and airflow, maintaining proper water levels and steam pressure, recording and interpreting meter and gauge readings, rotating auxiliary equipment, and performing routine adjustments, minor repairs, and basic maintenance. Additional duties include conducting tests on boiler and water softener samples, maintaining accurate records, properly handling and storing fuels, and upholding all safety standards.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain steam boilers and related auxiliary equipment, etc. in accordance with standard operating instruction and procedures and safety regulations.
  • Read and log meters and gauges at specified intervals to ensure proper temperature, pressure, fuel levels, water levels, etc.
  • Records data and maintains logs on such matters as temperatures fuel consumption, meter and gauge readings, etc.
  • Opens and closed valves and adjust controls to regulate fuel flow, airflow, water level, steam pressure, etc. To ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Check and monitors operating systems to detect faulty operating equipment, to determine necessary repairs, to notify appropriate personnel and/or determine when to shut the system down.
  • Cleans, maintains and/or lubricates power plant and related auxiliary equipment such as burners, pumps, filters, etc. to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Performs minor repairs and/or adjustment power plant and related auxiliary equipment using hand tools in order to ensure proper and safe operation.
  • Rotate auxiliary equipment weekly to ensure all equipment is available and to equalize wear.
  • Test boiler and softener samples to ensure compliance with established limits.
  • Performs related duties such as maintaining cleanliness and appearance of power plant, receipt and proper delivery of fuels, and attending training programs as required.
  • Follows all safety procedures involved in the proper operations of all plant equipment.
  • All other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge in the operation and maintenance of steam boilers, low and or high pressure, and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Knowledge of the methods and technique of operation of steam boilers and auxiliary equipment.
  • Knowledge of types and uses of electrical, mechanical and pneumatic controls used in power plant operations.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of precision measuring equipment used in a power plant such as a manometers, voltmeters, anemometers, tachometers, etc.
  • Knowledge of calibrations and/or adjustment techniques as applied to control systems used in power plant operations.
  • Knowledge of the safety procedures followed in power plant operations.
  • Knowledge of proper methods of storage and handling of fuel.
  • Skill in using tools such as wrenches, pliers, screw drivers, hacksaws, pipe threaders, etc.
  • Knowledge of the safety procedures followed in power plant operations.
  • Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, guidelines, etc. governing assigned unit activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifications, drawings, technical manuals, etc.
  • Ability to use precision measuring equipment, devices and instrumentation.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend the English language.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Ability to visually distinguish colors.
  • Ability to adjust to changing situations to meet emergency or changing production requirements.
  • Physical stamina and endurance.
  • Mechanical aptitude

Qualifications Acquired on Job:

About the Massachusetts Veterans Home at Chelsea:

The Massachusetts Veterans Home (MVH) at Chelsea is an independent state agency that organizationally report to the Secretary of the Executive Office of Veterans Services (EOVS). The Veterans Homes are owned and operated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and address the needs of a wide variety of veterans, including long term care and domiciliary services meeting the veteran residents' care and psychosocial needs. The care and services provided by MVH are supported by a staff of approximately 450; representing physicians, advanced practice clinicians, nurses, aides, social workers, recreation therapist, physical and occupational therapy, speech language pathology, educators, building trades, dietary, housekeeping, managers, support staff, consultants and contractors. The tradition of service to the veterans of Massachusetts is surpassed only by a continued commitment to excellence in care for those who are in need now and in the future.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a current and valid First or Second Class Steam Firemans license issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety, pursuant to Chapter 146 of the Massachusetts General Laws.
