Position Summary
The Sign Painter and Letterer II position is responsible for the design and fabrication of all MassDOT related signage and vehicle decals throughout the assigned area. This encompasses a broad variety of signage types and requirements in compliance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), MassDOT specifications and right of way stipulations.
The Sign Painter and Letterer II performs highly skilled tasks and utilizes computer software and hardware to design, fabricate signs, vehicle decals and other visual communication media; operates computerized vinyl plotters, printers, laminators, and other equipment and tools for fabrication; prepares substrates; maintains inventory levels of supplies and tools; maintains equipment to ensure proper functionality; prepares required reports; performs related duties as required. The technician determines signage needs and timelines of requests, plans, and executes the work of sign and decal design and fabrication.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for the operations and maintenance of all sign shop equipment.
- Through proper forms and procedure responsible to record the use and status of all shop materials.
- Interprets all related MUTCD, federal, state, regulations to maintain adherence to the appropriate standards.
- Assists in the assessment and training of subordinates and other shop employees in all areas of sign production and installation.
- Receives and completes sign orders, documents status on requires forms and work order systems.
- Applies decals using the appropriate methods and tools to vehicles, buildings, doors, glass, signs, etc.
- Utilizes tools and machines to cut and shape sign materials.
- Monitors compliance with and adheres to safety requirements and regulations for use of all equipment, tools, and materials.
- Produces signage utilizing various methods. Produces signage utilizing various software programs including Gerber Omega, Adobe Creative Suite, Roland Versa Works, Flexi, etc.
- Prepare reports and maintain shop records.
- Performs duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in sign painting or lettering, graphic arts or graphic design, drawing, drafting or art work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A diploma or certificate from a recognized school above the high school level with a major in art, graphic arts, graphic design, drawing or drafting may be substituted for the required experience.
Education toward such a diploma or certificate will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
