The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conserving the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public. The Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) serves Massachusetts' citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats while providing sustainable fisheries-related recreational and commercial opportunities.

Job Opening: The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries seeks applicants for a Seasonal Recreational Fisheries Technician to perform the following duties:
DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collects biological samples for aging, demographic, economic, and fisheries data in coastal waters and on shore, including work on small craft in bays and estuaries, research vessels and "for hire" recreational vessels.
- Records data on appropriate forms or electronically on tablets, and self-audits data before submission.
- Records and organizes data including computer coding and data entry for computer analysis.
- Operates and maintains field equipment including motor vehicles, small craft and trailers, and sampling gear.
- Asset with Striped bass tagging aboard contracted vessels
- Assists with other Division of Marine Fisheries' projects and conducts research when time permits.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to identify marine fish and invertebrates common in Massachusetts' coastal waters.
- Experience working on fishing vessels and small craft with common sampling tools.
- Knowledge of computer software applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience filling data forms in the field and compiling data in tabular and graphical form.
- Ability to interact favorably with the angling public, boat crews and captains.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including some weekends, to accommodate sea sampling trips.
- Ability to handle heavy specimens (up to 40 lbs) and work in wet and/or cold environments.
REMARKS
This is a seasonal position, no benefits included - except earned sick leave. The start date for the position is April 22, 2025, and will be for six months. There are 2 open positions for this posting.
