The Department of Conversation & Recreation (DCR) is steward of one of the largest state parks systems in the country. About the Division of Design and Engineering:

Continuing over a century of visionary land stewardship, DCR's Division of Design & Engineering (D&E) collaborates with colleagues within DCR, other agencies, and communities across the state to plan, design, build, and maintain a diversity of outdoor recreational experiences and unique landscapes throughout the Commonwealth. In addition, our staff is responsible for maintaining public infrastructure including dams, seawalls, parkways and park roads, sidewalks and trails, and stormwater systems. This requires employing a diverse range of talent including architects, engineers, landscape architects, planners, tradespeople as well as business, finance and administrative support who work together to support D&E's mission. Our staff is unified by a passion for providing access to high quality public open space and outdoor recreation for all ages and abilities, and strive to improve visitor experience, enhance universal accessibility, and help modernize DCR's facilities and resources to be more carbon neutral, energy independent, and resilient to climate change.

Position Information:

Seasonal Laborer II-Flood Control (Boston): 11/10/24-03/15/25 (18 weeks) @ 40 hrs: Monday-Friday, 7:00am-3:30pm. 1 position(s).

This position reports to 100 Noonan Place, Somerville

Please note, if you are selected for this position and will be working less than 90 days, the position will automatically revert to a short-term position.

Our short-term positions are not part of the salary scale that is advertised within this job posting. Should this position revert to a short-term seasonal position (less than 90 days), your salary rate will be discussed with you during the interview phase of the process.

Position Summary:

DCR Flood Control is responsible for maintaining the elevation of the Charles and Mystic River Basins, comprising nearly 1,000 acres of water sheet, thereby protecting real estate valued at approximately $60-billion as well as countless lives; operation of 14 pump stations preventing flooding of Storrow Drive, Soldiers Field Road, and Memorial Drive in the communities of Boston and Cambridge; operation of two coastal flood protection pump stations in Revere, MA; and operation of numerous dams along the Charles River, Mother Brook, Mystic River, and Neponset River.

Duties:

• Assist in the maintenance of machinery and equipment including greasing, changing drive belts, removing pump inspection covers and other components as directed and under the supervision of experienced staff.

• Work over, around, and in water performing activities including removing, installing, and maintaining stop logs at dams and other water control structures; clearing debris from dam spillways, trash racks, and other areas; cut, remove, and dispose of vegetation using hand tools such as saws, clippers, string trimmers, and similar.

• Remove and dispose of debris and sediment from pump station sumps using buckets, shovels, and other tools as required.

• Clean vehicles including interior and exterior.

• Clean building facilities including bathrooms, windows, floors and other areas using brooms, mops, vacuums, dusters, and other cleaning implements.

• Shovel snow, spread salt and sand, chip ice, and operate snow blower during inclement weather and at other times.

• Assist with moving heavy objects and equipment such as lumber, stoplogs, motors, logs, trash, etc.

• Safely operate, and maintain, DCR vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Candidates should be comfortable working around water, climbing ladders, working at height, working in tight and restricted locations, and spending extended time outside, including during inclement weather.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Ability to prioritize, manage, and execute multiple tasks simultaneously.

• Possession of a current and valid Mass Driver's license

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least six months of full-time, or equivalent part- time experience in performing manual labor in connection with general construction or maintenance work.
