Rehabilitation Aide

Job Description

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking a Rehabilitation Aide to join our Physical Therapy department. The incumbent would be a non-licensed individual who performs designated routine tasks related to the operation of the Rehabilitative Services Department and assists with patient-related activities under the direction and/or supervision of a licensed therapist.

Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00-4:30PM, Weekends Off

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Transport patients to and from the Rehabilitative Services Department safely and efficiently for scheduled therapy sessions.
  • Assist therapists with direct treatment and perform maintenance-level therapy programs, including ADLs/self-care, positioning, Range of Motion, strengthening, and gait programs using assistive devices.
  • Enter therapy charges into the Electronic Medical Record, adhering to department policies.
  • Inform therapists or assistants of any changes in patient condition or performance.
  • Communicate courteously with hospital staff, patients, and families.
  • Maintain treatment areas, supplies, and patient equipment in a clean, safe, and operational condition, reporting repair needs to therapists.
  • Attend required in-service programs and interdisciplinary medical service rounds as a representative of the Rehabilitative Services Department.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and infection control policies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions with precision.
  • Sound judgment in independent work settings.
  • Proficiency in accurate documentation practices.
  • Capability to lift or move heavy objects and assist individuals as needed.
  • Strong understanding and application of policies, procedures, and guidelines governing activities.
  • Compassionate interaction with individuals under physical or emotional distress.
  • Skill in delivering clear, precise oral instructions.
  • Attention to maintaining accurate records.
  • Physical stamina and endurance to handle demanding tasks.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform maintenance therapy programs under the guidance of licensed therapy personnel.
  • Solid knowledge of body mechanics and safe lifting techniques, including carrying heavy objects or persons.
  • Competency in maintaining and adapting equipment effectively.
  • Familiarity with orthopedic appliances, prosthetic devices, and other types of adaptive equipment.
  • Capacity to learn and adhere to rehabilitation therapy policies, cardiopulmonary resuscitation protocols, fire safety, and infection control procedures.

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, Lemuel Shattuck Hospital has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

S alary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines.
