Job Description

Taunton State Hospital is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Nurse Manager (Registered Nurse V). The selected candidate directs, oversees, coordinates, and evaluates nursing care on assigned inpatient unit across all shifts to ensure competent, person-centered care that meets established standards, policies, and protocols. Provides and supervises the provision of direct nursing care and treatment to adult psychiatric patients by participating as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, employing professional standards of practice. The RN V will champion hospital PI projects and be an active participant on hospital wide committees. Acts as a backup for all other RN IV and V nurses as needed/ requested. Maintains effective working relationships with multidisciplinary personnel to ensure safe and efficient unit operations and optimal patient outcomes within a trauma-informed, recovery focused therapeutic environment that complies with Joint Commission, CMS, DPH and DMH's standards, conditions of participation and regulatory guidelines. Able to support Director of Nursing activities, including in the absence of the Director of Nursing. Perform related duties as assigned.

Please Note: This position is 40 hours per week on Cain 4 East. The incumbent will work on the first shift from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with Sunday and Saturday off.

Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime.

Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Provides overall supervision of staff on assigned units, assessing and evaluation of patient care via rounds, meetings, conferences, and devaluation to coordinate and maximize delivery of care using available resources.
  • Provides supervision of subordinate staff: ensuring effective communication, problem solving and performance, approve and monitor time and attendance, and complete performance evaluations.
  • Ensures compliance with established standards, protocols and policies through observation, consultation, and documentation review.
  • Working with the Nursing Office Support Specialist, reviews daily staffing needs to maintain adequate professional and para-professional staffing coverage to ensure adequate delivery of care based on the needs of the patients.
  • Leads and models crisis resolution activities. Responds, delegates, and performs in psychiatric and medical emergencies.
  • Provides immediate counseling to staff as indicated and follows through with nursing administration.
  • Supports and assists in the orientation and mentoring of new staff, serving as a resource to the preceptor/orientee as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with Nursing Leadership and Nurse Executive/DON regarding patient and staff issues and needs.
  • Interviews and participates in hiring of nursing personnel for the patient care unit.
  • Provides timely performance reviews for all probationary employees.
  • Conducts verbal and written criteria-based performance appraisals (EPRS) for nursing personnel at regular intervals and as needed to ensure professional development and compliance with required DMH competencies.
  • Serves as a role model and resource person for nursing staff hospital wide.
  • Participates in Nursing PI projects, clinical committees, and other groups to enhance patient care.
  • Participates in the planning, developing and implementation of the Person-Centered Plan of care for patients on assigned units.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of discharge barriers that may contribute to the patient's length of stay and works as a Team member to maintain a discharge ready milieu for patient.
  • Practices principles of Collaboration, Assessment, and Recovery utilizing early intervention and de-escalation techniques to intervene in escalating situations.
  • Provides nursing care for patients by following professional, hospital, departmental and certification standards to maintain quality care.
  • Provides psychosocial support to patients through individual counseling and group work, leading or co-leading groups.
  • Identifies, evaluates, and responds to changes in patient conditions, reporting and documenting these changes to ensure a prompt response to patient needs.
  • Identifies and provides the delivery of individualized patient care by listening to 24-hour patient reports, assessing patient needs, administering nursing treatments based on the accepted standards of care.
  • Provides care to patients utilizing a Person-Centered Approach within a Recovery model of care.
  • Provides direct patient care, custody, and supervision to adult patients on locked inpatient DMH psychiatric units.
  • Communicates all pertinent information to hospital and nursing administration when indicated.
  • Continually consults with staff to determine their educational needs and works with peers and administration to ensure that needs are met.
  • Demonstrates responsibility regarding punctuality and attendance.
  • Completes mandatory training requirements as assigned.
  • Assess the educational needs of staff and patients. Provides needed education on an individual basis to facilitate improved patient care and increase independent level of functioning.
  • Performs duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated leadership/managerial potential, which includes interpersonal competence: and organizational skills.
  • At least three years' experience working in a psychiatric setting.
  • Experience with TJC and CMS surveys, policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Experience with Department of Mental Health policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

License and/or Certification Requirements:

  • Current and Valid licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Taunton State Hospital (TSH) operated by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) is a 62-bed inpatient facility that provides continuing care inpatient services to adults with major mental illnesses. The hospital is a leader in the successful integration of the Principles of Recovery and a rehabilitation philosophy into the treatment model and a part of the Southeast Area which works closely with the inpatient treatment teams to facilitate patients' discharge back to the community.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least two years must have been in a supervisory, administrative, or managerial capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.

Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing .

Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.

Special Requirements: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
