Job Description

The Massachusetts Mental Health Center, a part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Department of Mental Health is seeking a dynamic Registered Nurse V, Senior Nursing Supervisor, to oversee the daily operations of nursing staff and services across the Center's behavioral health continuum. This role ensures that psychiatric nursing care is delivered efficiently and in line with established standards and protocols. The Senior Nursing Supervisor will lead by example, fostering a collaborative work environment while guiding, mentoring, and supervising the nursing team. This position is crucial for maintaining the safe and highly specialized clinical operations of the Center as well as playing a critical role in ensuring the clinical service delivery, nursing supervision, and operational effectiveness by meeting the complex and comprehensive direct clinical care needs of individuals in the Commonwealth who access services through the Department of Mental Health.

Please Note: The hours for this position are Monday through Friday 8 am to 4:30 pm. Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Responsible for the coordination and supervision of all nursing and wellness services at 75 Fenwood Road.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of all nursing-related medical documentation.
  • Meets with nursing staff and team leaders daily to discuss and address clinical and administrative issues impacting service delivery and quality assurance and collaborates with clinic leadership to mitigate concerns.
  • Attends all relevant meetings as assigned by the Center DON.
  • Functions as the Infection and exposure Control Nurse for the building, ensuring that all protocols are followed, all precautions are taken to prevent exposure, and that all IAs are submitted if and when an exposure incident occurs
  • Develops and updates unit policies/ procedures in conjunction with quality and clinical management
  • Approves timesheets and leave requests for assigned staff ensuring safe and appropriate staffing levels.
  • Coordinates and assigns nursing schedules including overtime shifts.
  • Provides direct nursing care and services.
  • Maintains confidentiality of client information.
  • Employs Motivational Interviewing approach to motivate clients to participate in individual treatment plans.
  • Ability to treat and interact with persons who are under physical/emotional stress.
  • Assesses, analyzes and determines the applicability of clinical data in order to make and/or take appropriate actions, recommendations, or referrals.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides discipline-specific supervision and support to all assigned staff.
  • Provides clinical coverage when staff are absent or unavailable, ensuring leadership and support for the assigned MMHC programs and ensures adequate coverage within assigned areas is maintained.
  • Promotes teamwork by demonstrating flexibility, the ability to listen to the views of others, to compromise, to handle conflict and stay focused on a positive outcome.
  • Provides weekly (or more or less frequent, as appropriate) supervision for assigned staff, including documenting and collaboratively working to address any performance issues that may arise with direct reports and their respective supervisees.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable state and federal laws, including Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act, (HIPAA) regulations which govern the privacy and confidentiality of information about patients.

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing including the terminology and standard abbreviations used in nursing.
  • Experienced with the challenges in providing nursing services to special client groups with cognitive, physical, mental illness, addictions, and housing support needs.
  • Practiced in the types and applications of emergency medical procedures, such as CPR.
  • Familiar with the methods and techniques followed in collecting/transporting laboratory specimens.
  • Knowledgeable in the standard nursing policies, procedures, methods, and techniques, the principles of physiological, psychological, and emotional growth and development and characteristics of drugs used in treating physical and mental disorders.
  • Skilled in the diagnostic procedures employed in nursing practice, interviewing and problem-solving techniques and the psychotherapies and principles of psychosocial rehabilitation.
  • Ability to understand and apply rules, regulations, and laws governing agency and unit operations, maintain accurate records, follow and give clear and precise oral and written instructions and read and interpret documents such as physician's orders and treatment plans.
  • Capable of contributing to a multi-disciplinary health care team.
  • Able to exercise sound judgment, make decisions and act quickly in emergency situations, establish rapport and deal effectively with persons from diverse cultures, races, and lifestyles while maintaining confidentiality of client information.
  • Skilled in motivating clients to participate in individual treatment plans and treating and interacting with persons who are under physical/emotional stress.
  • Experienced in assessing, analyzing, drawing conclusions and determining the applicability of clinical data in order to make andrecommend referrals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, policies and procedures governing agency and clinic and the types and uses of agency and clinic forms.
  • Familiar with public and private community-based resources for clients and the safety practices and procedures followed by the agency and clinic
  • Knowledgeable about the newest therapies, interventions and behavioral techniques.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least two years must have been in a supervisory, administrative, or managerial capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.

Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing .

Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.

Special Requirements: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
