Job Description

Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital operated by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to serve as Nursing Supervisor.

The selected candidate will supervise and coordinate patient care staff and nursing care activities throughout the facility during an assigned shift by generating nursing assignments and time schedules. The Nursing Supervisor will assess compliance with JCAHO and facility standards, physician orders and treatment plans as well as ensuring continuity of care.

Please Note: This position is 40 hours per week, in the Nursing Supervisor's Office: Evening shift (2:45PM to 11:15PM) with days off as Week 1: Tuesday/Saturday and Week 2: Sunday/Wednesday.

Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Receives and delivers report on client status at change of shift to ensure proper follow-up.
  • Provides direct and/or indirect nursing care as necessary as assigned by the DON/ADON.
  • Collaborates with the charge nurse, identifies and sets priorities for the management of patient treatment through data collection, observation and close communications with nursing staff and other clinicians.
  • Receives & reviews unit report regarding client status, clinical issues/events, incidents and activity level of the milieu; uses these to assess unit staffing levels.
  • Delivers direct and/or indirect nursing care as necessary as assigned by DON/ADON.
  • Consults with charge nurse to identify specific priorities for the management of patient, staff and milieu issues.
  • Supervises assigned nursing staff ensuring effective communication, problem solving and performance and conducts disciplinary conferences when necessary
  • Ensures compliance with established standards of care through observation, consultation and documentation review
  • Investigates and completes patient or staff accident/injury reports, incident reports, and complaints, incorporating all appropriate precautionary actions and follow-up.
  • Participates in, assesses and evaluates all emergency response activities of nursing staff; Leads and models crisis resolution activities
  • Collaborates with Clinical Supervisors regarding employee and/or patient issues as needed
  • Assists with maintaining Nursing direct labor budget through monitoring, assessment and adjustment of staff based on acuity and patient needs and overtime usage.
  • Encourages reduction of restraint/seclusion by providing ongoing staff and patient education, including the use of de-escalation tools
  • Provides ongoing patient education regarding medication, health and wellness, diagnoses, stressors, discharge planning and other topics as required
  • Participates in Nursing Management meetings, Performance Improvement and Risk Management through committee work, problem identification and routine monitoring.

Required Qualifications

  • Two (2) years' experience as a registered nurse supervisor and will combine the knowledge, clinical skills, and judgment necessary to perform all nursing procedures as outlined in the scope of practice.
  • Current and valid license as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining staff training needs and providing or arranging for such training; and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action.
  • Ability to prepare statistical reports and maintain accurate records.
  • Talent for providing written and oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
  • Capacity to participate in inter-disciplinary health care teams.
  • Skilled in establishing rapport and deal tactfully with persons from varied ethnic, cultural, economic backgrounds, and/or under physical, emotional stress, or in stressful settings.
  • Willingness to work varied shifts and/or irregular hours/weekends, holidays, nights.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Meditech & Meta experience, CPR and IV certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard nursing policies, procedures, methods, techniques, safety practices and medical terminology/abbreviations.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with individuals, families, providers, physicians and staff members.
  • Proficient usage of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience working with individuals with serious, persistent mental illness
  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.
  • American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Prior experience working with the adolescent population

About Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH):
Located on over 20 acres in Worcester, Massachusetts, Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (WRCH) is part of an integrated network of effective, efficient, and culturally competent mental health services. It provides intermediate and long-term inpatient care for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness who live in Massachusetts, as well as individuals requiring specialized court ordered evaluations.

WRCH provides inpatient services to 290 adults and 30 adolescents, inclusive of a Deaf Inpatient Mental Health Service program for 10 patients.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.

Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES:Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.

Title 101 CMR 23.00 ("Regulation") requires certain agency staff to have received the COVID-19 vaccination and Influenza vaccination, or have taken required mitigation measures, to prevent viral infection and transmission in State Hospitals and State Congregate Care Facilities.
