Job Description

Western Massachusetts Hospital operated by the Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to serve as the Nursing House Supervisor. We are a specialty care hospital providing in-patient services to individuals in need of ventilator/respiratory, end of life care, neuromuscular, Alzheimer's, and chronic care. The selected candidate supervises and coordinates patient care staff and nursing care activities throughout the facility during an assigned shift for adult and/geriatric patients by generating nursing assignments and time schedules. The Nursing House Supervisor will assess compliance with JCAHO and facility standards, physician orders and treatment plans as well as ensuring continuity of care and completion of Nursing Care Plan (NCP).

The ideal candidate will have two (2) years' experience as a registered nurse supervisor and will combine the knowledge, clinical skills, and judgment necessary to perform all nursing procedures as outlined in the scope of practice. As a member of the nursing staff, the incumbent will assume expanded functions in the provision of services including compliance with JCAHO/facility standards, physician orders and individual care plans.

Please Note:This position is 40 hours per week, 3:00 PM - 11:30 PM shift and will share weekend/holiday coverage and other shifts as operationally needed.

Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

• Provides direction in the delivery of quality nursing care to culturally diverse adult/geriatric patient populations; supervises nursing staff and patient care activities on assigned units for all shifts.

• Ensures the development of an individual care plan for each patient.

• Assigns and prepares time schedules for staff to ensure adequate 24/7 nursing coverage as defined by the hospital staffing system.

• Provides staff, patient and family members instruction and educational case conferences to confirm continuity of care and compliance with facility standards and regulations.

• Evaluates nursing activities by reviewing patient charts, observing care, visiting patients/families to safeguard nursing care and treatment in accordance with physicians' instructions.

• Fosters high standards of care through the provision of diligent orientation and continuing education efforts of staff including best practices, teamwork and professional development.

• Investigates complaints by patients and others, and attempts to resolve such complaints.

• Perform clinical tasks in adherence to acceptable standards of nursing practice to ensure that the care provided is safe and effective; perform the duties as a charge nurse as necessary

• Orchestrates the transfer of patients to other health care facilities for emergency and routine services as needed.

• Coordinates supplies and equipment to ensure established inventory levels; recommend to nursing administration purchase of new equipment to improve and/or maintain the quality of patient care

• Provides feedback and performance appraisals to assigned staff; documents staff performance matters through progressive discipline when appropriate.

• Participates in a schedule to work as the House Supervisor on weekends, holidays, on other shifts and as administratively required.

Required Qualifications:

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining staff training needs and providing or arranging for such training; and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action.

• Ability to prepare statistical reports and maintain accurate records.

• Talent for providing written and oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner.

• Capacity to participate in inter-disciplinary health care teams.

• Skilled in establishing rapport and deal tactfully with persons from varied ethnic, cultural, economic backgrounds, and/or under physical, emotional stress, or in stressful settings.

• Willingness to work varied shifts and/or irregular hours/weekends, holidays, nights.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Two (2) years' experience as a Registered Nurse Supervisor.

• Meditech & Meta experience, CPR and IV certification.

• Sound knowledge of philosophy, principles, practices, and theories of public health and public health nursing.

• Demonstrated knowledge of standard nursing policies, procedures, methods, techniques, safety practices and medical terminology/abbreviations.

• Ability to establish relationships with individuals, families, providers, physicians and staff members.

• Proficient usage of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.

Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
