Tewksbury Hospital, part of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking a dynamic and experienced Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to provide essential psychiatric services to medically ill inpatients with co-occurring mental health conditions, addiction disorders, developmental disabilities, and other special needs. This role emphasizes psychopharmacology and collaboration, ensuring comprehensive care through psychiatric consultations, diagnostic evaluations, and ongoing treatment management. With a focus on patient-centered care, you will work closely with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement individualized treatment plans that support recovery and enhance quality of life.

Please Note: This position works 40 hours per week, days, Monday through Friday.
Employees in this position will be required to work mandatory overtime.
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations for medical inpatients to develop and communicate psychopharmacological treatment plans to attending physicians.
• Prescribe and monitor medications to treat mental health conditions, enhance psychosocial functioning, and support patients in achieving greater community integration.
• Assess patients' capacity for informed consent regarding treatment and coordinate appropriate legal actions including guardianships when necessary.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to create and implement individualized treatment plans, ensuring the integration of behavioral health and medical care.
• Provide timely psychiatric consultations, including emergency response and management of patients exhibiting acute or challenging behaviors.
• Facilitate evaluations and documentation required for conservatorship and guardianship processes in accordance with regulatory timelines.
• Maintain accurate and compliant clinical records, adhering to hospital documentation standards and supporting medical staff requirements.
• Incorporate evidence-based psychopharmacological practices by staying current with psychiatric research and literature.
• Participate in hospital committees, professional development opportunities, and interdisciplinary meetings to promote knowledge exchange and policy development.
• Ensure compliance with hospital and regulatory standards by completing required documentation, coding, and time-tracking processes.
Required Qualifications:
• Extensive knowledge of psychiatric theories, principles, and practices, including diagnostic and treatment methods in behavioral health and psychopharmacology.
• Expertise clinical interviewing techniques to assess and address diverse psychiatric needs
• Proficiency in understanding and appropriate use of medications in behavioral health care.
• Understanding of the challenges and trends in providing behavioral health services to under-served, complex, culturally diverse and traumatized medical inpatients.
• Awareness of the social and economic issues affecting minority and disadvantaged individuals and their impact on mental health care.
• Strong ability to establish rapport and build trust with individuals from various ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
• Skill in interacting compassionately and effectively with individuals experiencing physical or emotional stress.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Extensive knowledge of psychiatric theories, principles, and practices, including diagnostic and treatment methods for substance use and addictions.
• At least three (3) years of experience as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.
• Certification and license as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic, or medical facility, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.
Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
Special Requirements:
Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Current and valid authorization to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
