Job Description
General Statement of Duties:
The basic purpose of this position is to provide important maintenance and repair services through specialized skills to ensure the health and safety of inmates and staff. Responsible for all aspects of plumbing related functions and requirements of all facilities in compliance with applicable plumbing codes. Incumbents of positions in this area maintain care and custody of inmates detained or sentenced by ensuring that established policies and procedures are followed. Other duties performed are under somewhat undesirable working conditions and may require intermittent moderate physical effort and potential risk of injury typically associated with working with inmates.

Supervision Received:
Works under direct supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Maintenance or a correctional employee of higher rank who provides instruction and guidance, assigns work and reviews performance through oral and written reports for adherence to policy and conform with rules and regulations.
Supervision Exercised:
Must be able to supervise building specialists and direct inmates in work programs and vocational training, crediting them with monthly good time.
Essential Functions:
• Plumbing Maintenance, repair and upkeep of all plumbing fixtures, pumps, Gas equipment heating systems.
• Layout, installation, and repair of all piping including Potable water, non-potable water, Gas and drainage systems.
• Tasks will include repair or replace Fittings, Valves, fixtures, flushometers, toilets, showers, sinks, faucets, water heaters, garbage disposals, dishwashers following Massachusetts State plumbing Codes.
• Organizes inmate labor, coordinating the use of trustees with Security and Programs, and Inmate Training to maintain the facility in a cost-effective manner.
• Responds to all emergency situations at the facility.
• Assist in the evaluation and maintenance of standards for cleanliness of the physical plant, including all buildings on site.
• Serves as contact person linking the Supervisor of Maintenance with various operating departments within the facility.
• Supervises specialist personnel in the installation of new equipment as necessary -- e.g., minor carpentry, wiring, plumbing work, etc
• Opening clogged drains with various size machines.
• Position will require ability to work in confined space such as plumbing closets and manholes and ability to lift fifty pounds
• This position entails all duties assigned, including general maintenance of all facilities, the grounds and snow removal.

Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
• Three to five years plumbing experience.
• Must have a minimum of a Massachusetts Journeyman's Plumbing License
• Must have maintained yearly training standard and attend additional training as required by the
office.
• Ability to act calmly, make decisions and act quickly in emergencies and dangerous situations.
• Ability to adapt to varying work situations.
• Ability to motivate others and to understand, explain and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
• Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Possess reasonable physical stamina and endurance.
• Ability to maintain accurate records, prepare reports, analyze and determine the applicability of data, draw conclusions and to make appropriate recommendations.
