Job Description

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH), operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is currently seeking a dynamic and experienced nursing professional for the position of Nurse Practitioner. The selected candidate will provide an exceptional patient care experience that promotes healing and recovery in a compassionate public health hospital environment. LSH is a 248 bed, Joint Commission accredited, long term acute care (LTAC) hospital that provides high quality, comprehensive treatment, care, and comfort to complex adult patients with chronic diseases and complex medical conditions.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a health professional qualified by academic and clinical training to assist in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings in medical disciplines. The NP works under the supervision (but not necessarily in the presence) of a qualified licensed physician.

Please note: The shift hours for this position are between 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Days off are Saturday and Sunday. This position covers 4 weekends and one holiday for vent and subacute inpatients.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive)

  • Evaluates and examines patients by performing tasks such as taking medical histories, conducting physical examinations, obtaining body fluids such as blood, spinal fluid, and urine for laboratory tests; prescribes medications and treatments.
  • Practices in an expanded role throughout the facility by collaborating with all health professionals serving as a liaison between nursing and medical staff.
  • Assists and confers with physicians to obtain guidance and direction on patient care provided.
  • Instructs and counsels patients regarding physical and mental health, including proper diet, disease prevention, therapy, normal growth and development, family planning, situation adjustment reactions, and other health care matters.
  • Participates in rounds on community and correctional patients in inpatient settings, recording patients progress notes, determining and implementing therapeutic plans in conjunction with the supervising physician, and compiling and recording pertinent case summaries.
  • Ensures timely completion of medical record keeping including drafting progress notes on all patients and documenting all interventions.
  • Coordinates the development and implementation of patients' individualized care plans; Serves as a team leader of patient meetings.
  • Participates in on call coverage/rotation to the hospital on an assigned basis as part of the rapid response team.
  • Attends teaching seminars, medical grand rounds specialty conferences and workshops; Participates in the education of students.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of nursing.
  • Experience with the techniques of physical diagnosis, including those used in taking a medical history, performing a physical evaluation, and synthesizing of the history, physical and laboratory findings to arrive at an accurate evaluation of the patient.
  • Knowledge of the principles of basic diagnostic radiology as they pertain to the use and interpretation of radiographs pertinent to primary case medicine.
  • Familiarity with safety practices and procedures followed in a medical facility.
  • Ability to establish rapport and deal tactfully with persons from different ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be a graduate from a program for the education and training of Nurse Practitioners which has been approved by the Massachusetts Board of Approval and Certification of Nurse Practitioner Programs, Department of Public Health (M.G.L. Chapter 112, ss. 9C-9H)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least one year of clinical work as a nurse practitioner
  • Suboxone (Buprenorphine) waivered Practitioner.
  • Clinical practice providing treatment for inpatient or therapeutic healthcare or hospital environments; Ventilator experience a plus.
  • Strong problem solving, conceptual, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Skilled in working in a culturally diverse setting and passionate about public health.
  • Ability to work independently with physicians and administrative input as necessary.
  • Capacity to possess cognitive, organizational, emotional ability and maturity to effectively manage potential stressors and demanding situations.
  • An appreciation of the importance of a multidisciplinary team, and what patient care departments bring to the patient care endeavor, and the strength of that partnership.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Outlook, and Word.

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds.

In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic, or medical facility, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.

Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Special Requirements:

Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing. Current and valid authorization to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range .
