Job Description
The Department of Mental Health (DMH) is seeking a Registered Nurse to serve as a Nurse Educator. The Nurse Educator is responsible for evaluating the training needs, proposing, designing, and conducting training for staff in an assigned geographical area which may include inpatient facilities, outpatient facilities, site offices and group homes. The Nurse Educator will actively contribute to all clinical training, including but not limited to safety training within the assigned area and as needed statewide.
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive)
- Collaborates with Facility Clinical Leadership and Area Learning & Development Director in the identification of educational needs and competencies of staff and serves as an educational resource to assist in and promote the development of staff and students/interns.
- Provides and active role in ongoing development and implementation of Mandt training in assigned area.
- Oversees and coordinates staff development activities across shifts, by teaching, assigning classes, and training adjunct trainers.
- Reviews and updates the Site-based orientation programs on a regular basis to ensure the information presented is accurate and up to date.
- Develops curriculum to meet facility training needs.
- Creates and delivers trainings to enhance and maintain knowledge of hospital and community staff in assigned areas inclusive of CPR, Mandt, Suicide Prevention Training, Trauma Informed, and other developed training.
- Reviews and revises educational materials to ensure they meet current standards and training needs, observes the teaching of others, demonstrates presentation skills and independently follows through on educational objectives.
- Assists in the preparation for accreditation surveys and other regulatory and Departmental reviews.
- Promotes an environment of trauma-informed care and the use of least restrictive interventions.
- Promotes evidence-based practices and the highest quality standards of nursing care.
- Participates in appropriate committees or activities that review quality management issues by actively participating in facility performance improvement efforts including data collection, identifies training needs based on date findings and informs Area Learning Director, of these activities and findings and makes recommendations for performance improvement directed trainings.
- Adheres to all DMH policies, regulations, protocols, and procedures.
- Submits required and requested reports and status updates of training activities and staff compliance with required tasks to Director of Learning and Development.
- Assists in implementation of area, facility and DMH-wide Learning and Development initiatives as well as DMH educational initiatives.
- Expands professional knowledge concerning adult learning, and clinical topics by attending trainings and participating in self-paced learning activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
- Considerable knowledge of adult learning theories, practices, and trends in nursing.
- Working knowledge of biopsychosocial development across the life span.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision and determining nursing staff members' training needs and providing or arranging for such trainings.
- Ability to develop and implement training curriculum as well as plan and conduct training in a professional setting.
- Ability to effectively utilize nursing process in problem solving situations.
- Ability to set a positive working climate and to establish and maintain effective, productive working relationships with others.
- Ability to organize, manage, supervise and coach others in the provision of quality patient care including management of patient care unit.
- Ability to function independently and within a team with minimal supervision, demonstrating excellent judgment and attention to process and detail.
- Discretion, confidentiality, cultural awareness/respect for diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Willingness to travel for job-related purposes.
- Willingness to work varied shifts and/or irregular hours (i.e. weekends, holidays, nights) related to the Nursing Educator duties.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Joint Commission standards and other regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of DMH regulations and hospital licensing standards.
- Ability to utilize the Commonwealth's Learning Management System
- Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency
- CPR and Mandatory Instructor Certification
Please note: Travel to other DMH sites is required for this position. Candidate will need access to reliable transportation. Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least two years must have been in a supervisory, administrative, or managerial capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience.
Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing .
Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
Special Requirements: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
